Old Leamingtonians Ladies RFC travelled to Old Newtonians Ladies last weekend to get their first away victory of the season, winning 45 - 5 in blazing sunshine.

Old Leams got off to a slightly shaky start, giving away a couple of penalties, but they soon got any nerves under control.  Flanker Jen Vermeulen broke through the Old Newtonians’ line to score under the posts, and centre Sarah Munday got the conversion.

The next scorer was new girl Sam Smyth, who ran half the length of the pitch to bag her first try for Old Leams. This was closely followed by a speedy try from ‘back of the match’ and first-time scrum half Hollie Clark, who snuck through the Old Newtonians defence.  Munday once again converted both tries. In the last play before the break winger Liz Kennedy scored in the corner, meaning Old Leams tucked into their half time oranges with a 26 - 0 lead.

The away team kept up the intensity after the restart, with Munday making a run down the pitch and offloading to Sempere who scored.  The next try was a real team effort, with the ball pinging between backs and forwards before it finally came to captain Caz Spence, who put it over the try line.

Old Newtonians then put the pressure on, camping out in the Old Leams 22 and forcing some strong defence, especially from ‘forward of the match’ Carrie Steadman.  This wasn’t enough to hold Old Newtonians back though, and their perseverance was rewarded with a well deserved try.

In the final minutes all the play went Old Leams’ way, and shortly before the final whistle winger Tasha Barnes scored, making absolutely certain that Old Leams would return to Leamington victorious and second in the league.
