Old Leamingtonians Under 18s took a break from league and cup rugby, to play a friendly under the new lights at The Crofts against Daventry.

In front of a bumper crowd, and with Leamington RFC’s firework display in the background, OLs got off to a dreadful start. Missed tackles, a malfunctioning scrum, and a sharp-thinking Daventry side, saw the visitors move into a 15 – 0 lead inside the first ten minutes.

Slowly, OLs got into the game and scored when Connor Jones crashed over from a short penalty. Charlie Curtis added a conversion, the first of five on the night. OLs were now on the front foot and scored again through the rampaging George Parker. Daventry extended their lead with a penalty, but OLs edged in front on the stroke of half time with a fine try for Jack Edwards.

Daventry drew level early in the second half, as OLs infringed once more. Discipline was an issue for both sides with six yellow cards issued for a variety of offences. OLs regained the lead when another penalty saw AJ Beesley held up just short and the ball popped to Jordi Pocknell to score. Connor Jones added a second try with ten minutes to play, and victory was made safe when Matt Woodhouse fielded a Curtis cross kick to cross unopposed for OL’s sixth try of the night. The final score remained 40 – 21 to OLs.

OLs host Hereford in the Third Round of the National Colts Cup on Saturday, 2.15pm kick off.
