A listless first half display saw a much depleted OLs first team squad concede four tries and a penalty before any constructive home team play was effected. The first two Old Coventrians tries were scored from almost unhindered breaks from mid field without a tackle being attempted and it was nearly half time before OLs put together any joined up attacking play.
Tom Smith put OLs on the score sheet with a well taken try following a phase of good attacking play almost on the half time whistle but the try went unconverted to see the score at the interval 5 points to 29 in favour of the visitors.
The second half was a transformation with OLs taking the game to the visitors and playing more like a team, putting Old Coventrians under constant pressure. OLs defence improved considerably from the first half preventing Old Coventrians from putting together any structured play and it was OLs dominating possession and territory. The more positive play saw further tries from Reece Jones following good forward pressure that saw the bigger Old Coventrians pack pushed back over their own line, followed in quick succession by further strong forward pressure that saw the ball moved quickly out to winger Adam Stannard to cross in the corner. Neither try was converted.
OLs continued to apply good pressure on the visiting defences but despite valiant efforts by the forwards no further score was forthcoming.
Old Leamingtonians won the second half ten points to nil!
This was definitely a game of two halves with OLs showing what can be done if in the right mind set but there was simply no way back from a very disappointing first half display.
Next week sees OLs travel to Woodrush RFC in the penultimate game of the season. Kick off 3.0pm.
