Bretforton Ladies 1s 2-0 Wotton-under-Edge

In a ‘must-win’ game to move themselves further out of the relegation zone, Bretforton played host to struggling Wotton-under-Edge.

The home team came out the stronger of the two, and where unlucky not to score in the opening couple of minutes, and continued to pressure the Wotton defence with attack after attack.

The home team were rewarded for their hard work not long after when Dani Cox put Bretforton ahead when a battle of sticks in the area allowed her to slip the ball pass the keeper to make the score 1-0.

Cox nearly found herself on the scoresheet for a second time shortly after, when her strike on goal from a short corner was disallowed due to a ‘high ball’. Bretforton worked hard to increase their lead before half time and some great ‘changing play’ from player of the match Molly Stock gave Bretforton the chance to attack up both sides of the pitch, but were unable to score again within the first half.

After the break Bretforton continued to pressurise the visitors and a quick paced run up the right hand side and a perfectly timed cross from Hannah Dufty, gave Tess Lewinton the chance to sweep for the ball but unfortunately she couldn’t find the right contact to put the ball into the back of the net.

Wotton’s best chance of the game came when they were awarded a succession of short corners. At one point, due to breaking too early, the Bretforton defence were reduced to only two defenders and the keeper, but still Wotton couldn’t break through and the home team retained their advantage.

Some great triangles and running off the ball between Alice Cook and Emma Lowe, led to multiple chances to increase Bretforton’s lead, but Cook was unable to make the most of her one-on-ones with the keeper in the area. Cook was rewarded eventually though with a short corner shot from the edge of area, the ball slipped in the left hand corner to make the score 2-0.

Wotton weren’t giving up though and were only kept from scoring themselves when a flying shot towards the top right corner was parried by Lily Harrison-Perkins in the Bretforton goal, leaving the home team with a well deserved clean sheet.
