Old Leamingtonians Ladies RFC travelled to Leicestershire this weekend to take on Lutterworth Ladies RFC for the second time this season.

It was a slightly unusual Old Leams tea m that took to the field this Sunday, with many players playing out of position. Perhaps because of this Old Leams got off to a slightly nervy start. However, when Lutterworth gave away a penalty in front of the posts, and fly half Sam Smyth kicked to secure 3 points, Old Leams were able to relax and get in to their stride.

Flanker Jen Vermeulen made a break down the wing, dashing past the Lutterworth defence to score in the corner.  Sam Smyth followed this with a try, which she then converted to take the score to 15-0. Another penalty given away just yards from the Lutterworth try line meant another 3 points for Smyth, as her kick put Old Leams 18-0 up at half time.

Old Leams couldn’t sustain the momentum of the first half into the second, and made heavy work of things. There were some bright spots, with ‘back of the match’ Harriet Hillson bursting through the Lutterworth defence, and forward of the match Kyra Gleeson looking dangerous whenever she had the ball. However, Sam Smyth was able to take advantage of another penalty conceded in front of the posts to take Old Leams to 21 points.

Seeing out the match with 14 players on the pitch due to injury, the final moments were tense, but Old Leams fought to the end and returned to Leamington with a win and a clean sheet.
