First run out for a new look Southam who fielded a squad of 26 which is credit to the colts coaching and management team.

Southam started well and in the first 10 minutes were easily holding their own and in fact in the scrums were dominant but BB slowly started to gain their feet and it soon became obvious that when they shipped the ball out to their backs they were able to make serious ground. This lead to BB posting 2 tries in fairly quick succession and a possible rout looked on the cards. Rather than capitulate Southam bucked their ideas up and became far more positive in the rucks and started themselves to move the ball out wide. Southam were rewarded with a try to number 8 Rory Wagstaff to take the score to 5:10 going into the break.

Numerous changes for both sides upset the balance of the game for a while but Southam came out the more prepared and fired up and their improved counter rucking gave them the confidence to continue to move the ball out wide. Frustratingly numerous chances went begging but from  one such foray  captain and ever present wing forward Finn Toner pounced for a deserved score to level after 10 minutes.

Southam became almost camped in the BB’s 22 and continued pressure from excellent scrummaging allowed powerful back row Mike Richards to force he way over for the winning score 10 minutes from the end.

No single man of the match a real team effort and a good start to the season as Southam embark on the league fixtures that start next weekend.
