Match week 18 took place on Saturday 1st February and the impact of the inclement weather certainly took it toll as only a handful of matches managed to escape postponements; here is a summary of the action:

Under 15's B

The match between Bidford Juniors & Welford Juniors was an absolute cracker, with both teams contributing to exciting football in an end-to-end  contest.

The first goal arrived on 16-minutes when a Bidford players was brought down inside the box and Josh Hands stepped up to calmly slot the penalty into the net past the goalkeepers right hand. Welford attempted to force a quick equaliser, but were twice denied a goal with the Bidford keeper making two fine saves.

On the half hour mark, a neat counter attack from Welford saw debutant Reece Markey break clear of the Bidford defence and hit a powerful  low shot into the corner of the net to bring the game back to 1-1.

The second half started with Welford mounting two well worked attacks towards the high line of Bidford's defence but again the Bidford goalkeeper denied them a goal, 1st with an instinctive dive to turn the ball out for a corner and the 2nd save, a tremendous catch at the feet of an onrushing Welford attacker. The pressure on Bidford's goal was increasing and it was no surprise when a brilliantly measured through ball found Reece Markey in space and he turned one defender and hit a well struck 15 yard shot past the keeper to give his side the lead.

The response from Bidford was instant, as they attacked the Welford goal and brought a good save from goalkeeper Toby Tusznski , who tipped a ferocious 20-yard shot over his crossbar. Incredibly, James Bubb's corner kick evaded everyone in a packed penalty area and curled into the far corner of the net to bring the score back to 2-2.

As the 2nd half wore on, both goalkeepers were in sparkling form but it always seemed likely that more goals were to come.  This proved to be the case when an interchange of passing on the left saw a good cross from Bidford and Alex Steele ghosted in at the far post to put his side 3-2 ahead.  The away side reacted immediately and another good break saw Reece Markey complete a fine hat-trick with another accomplished finish to level the match yet again.

As the game headed towards a draw, there was still more drama in the final minutes as Bidford forced another corner-kick. The delivery was put high into the Welford box and unfortunately, Reece Markey's attempted headed clearance went into his own net for an own-goal. Despite pressing for another equaliser, Bidford held on to record a 4-3 victory.

The own-goal was indeed very unfortunate and a cruel way to decide the match, but Reece Markey & the rest of the Welford team should be immensely proud of how they played. Similarly, the Bidford team played well and showed good awareness throughout.
