Gloucester City 2nd XI 3 - 2 Bretforton Ladies 1st XI

Bretforton Ladies 1st XI finished their incredible season back in Premier 2A with a loss away to Gloucester City.

With other results going their way again though they have maintained second spot in the league with this being their final game.

In a game that saw Gloucester grumpy and ill-tempered at their impending relegation, it was Bret that broke the deadlock & scored first.  Terri Brown caused a kerfuffle in the ‘D’ and when her shot was saved Emma Lowe was on hand to slot the ball home.  Unfortunately Bret conceded the equaliser shortly afterwards.

Brets captain – Sarah Cook – had been forced to umpire this game & when the pink ladies lost both Deb Slatter & Daisy Wheeler to injury, they were really going to up against it to beat a “much improved” (ie with 1st XI players) Gloucester squad.

The Bretforton defence was determined as ever, Heather Carr throwing herself – literally – on the line and Liz Murray-White & Karen Fynn making some brilliantly timed tackles & keeping their players wide.

Brets second goal was champagne hockey all the way.  Midfield maestros Hayley Whitehouse & Lisa Workman weaved their way up the pitch with neat “one-twos” & it was Workman who received the final pass and her strike found the back of the net for a great goal which left the City keeper no chance.

Hard working Sarah Hall & Tess Lewinton were unlucky not to get on the score sheet this week & Julie Hall & Sophie Hamilton produced some awesome tackles at the back also.  Keeper & player of the match, Vicky Watkins, kept the score-line as low as possible.

This has been an amazing season for both Bretforton squads.  The 1st XI looking for mid-table respectability finished an astonishing second in the league – sheer hard work, tenacity and a will to win being the order of their season.  The 2nd XI team are more than deserving of their promotion – we are all proud of you girls !

The squad cannot achieve these things on their own however and our really grateful thanks go to our brilliant, thoughtful & handsome coach Stuart Bearcroft and also Sue Hedington for her important input also.

The support we have received this year has been fantastic – you make such a huge difference to our game – thank you all !
