Worcestershire County Cricket League

Summary of results Saturday 26th July 2014

After last week’s almost total washout, it was sun cream all round as teams sweltered their way back into action! Daylight has now appeared at the top of some divisions.

In Division One 1st XIs, Worcester have opened a gap of 17 points over Pershore after they saw off Evesham by 5 wickets and Pershore’s under strength side were losing at Hagley for whom Joe Lennon’s undefeated 114 trumped Liam Ridings’ 105.

Colwall are still 3rd, 43 points behind Pershore, but lost the chance to make up any ground as they became Bromyard’s first victims of the season at home by 6 wickets and this despite Rory Jones making 97. Bromyard are still last but have closed to just 5 points adrift of Evesham who they play in two weeks’ time.

Pedmore are now just a point back from Colwall and although it seems there may only be 3rd place to play for there are in fact 4 sides within a win of Colwall.

Yesterday Pedmore had to settle for a hard fought losing draw at home to Nomads, closing on 231-9 in reply to the visitors 306-6 which contained an unbeaten 130 scored by fit again Rich Henry who was injured in the sides’ first meeting in May.

Hagley are 5th after their win over Pershore and then come Nomads whose draw points mean they are 8 behind 3rd paced Colwall who they meet next week. Belbroughton lost the chance to really close up from 7th place as they went down at 8th placed Droitwich as the home side’s Kris Corbett cracked 118 to guide his team home by 2 wickets with 4 balls to spare following a century for Will Pardoe.

In the final match, Redditch lost to improving Harvington who are still 10th but now only 15 points behind them. Next week Pershore receive Harvington and so Hagley’s visit to Worcester could see another swing in the top two’s fortunes

Division Two 1st XIs – Burghill, last week’s only winners, maintained their lead over Bewdley at 26 points after they thrashed Enville and Bewdley beat Coombs Wood. In the scenario where more than two sides gain promotion, the battle is really on, as Oldswinford slipped up at Cookley and Dominies could not force a win at Malvern and so it was Lye who were the best performing mid-table side with a convincing win over Rushwick who were overtaken at the foot by virtue of Malvern’s losing draw points.

Feckenham beat Wormelow and so overtook Coombs Wood in the scramble for safety above Malvern and Rushwick.

Division Three 1st XIs – leaders Harborne beat Ross on Wye as Stourport slipped up behind them at Cleobury Mortimer, who jumped up two places, and now the leaders are 26 points in front.

Bredon beat Alvechurch to stay 3rd; however, star- billing again went to Mohammad Saddiq who took another 8 wickets for Chaddesley who thrashed Old Vigornians as the Old boys were put out in 14.2 overs for just 56.

Elsewhere, Netherton thrashed Tenbury and Avoncroft beat Alveley to keep both those sides in the trap door positions

Division Four 1st XIs – Bartestree and Lugwardine remain at the top and lead Himbleton, who they beat in the process by 37 points. Bromsgrove have closed to within 2 of Himbleton with a thrilling winning draw at Martley who closed on 266-9 just two runs behind Bromsgrove’s own 268-8.

Next come Kidderminster, who beat Oldswinford, and then Claverley who they overtook after a defeat at Halesowen, thanks to 120 from the home side’s Ross Northover. Old Hill drew with Himley and in the final match Romsley managed to haul themselves up a couple of places off the bottom with a win at Five Ways.

So, behind Bartestree there are 6 teams within a win of Himbleton and next week’s visit of Kidderminster to Bromsgrove and Claverley’s to Himbleton could prove crucial.

Division Five 1st XIs Kempsey again showed they are far too strong for the Division as they recorded one of the biggest wins ever racking up 377-5 declared in 41 overs, which included 108 for former County academy star Sam O’Neill, and then taking just 17 to dismiss Stourport for 62 with Adam Hunabun taking 9-25 and with them the Divisional best bowling record.

Barnards Green are trying hard to hang onto Kempsey’s coattails and yesterday beat bottom and winless Hallow, with Monzur Ahmed scoring 111 to do so. BG are 24 behind Kempsey who they face in two weeks and now 44 in front of Hanley Castle who play them next week and who lost out at Hanbury to Astwood Bank yesterday.

In the final matches, Stourbridge beat Old Elizabethans comfortably and Barnt Green edged home by one wicket at West Malvern with seven balls left out of 59 overs available.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the 2nd XIs, Division one Worcester Nomads lost their slender lead at the top and dropped to joint 5th with Pedmore for whom Dan Giles scored 107 not out to secure victory, this after Tim Dobinson-Law had laid a solid foundation of 92 for the Nomads. This result has allowed Stourport to jump to the top after they chased down Evesham’s large total that included 115 from Nasir Mahmood and Colwall are 1 point behind them after they beat Bewdley with most of their runs scored by 20 years old Henry Coleman with 148.

Hagley missed out on the chance to take top spot by not taking the last Rushwick wicket and they are 4 behind Stourport and 6 ahead of 4th placed Redditch who drew at home to Cookley.

So just 12 points cover the top half of the table and these six play each other next week as Stourport go to Hagley, Colwall receive Nomads and Redditch travel to Pedmore.

The bottom half sides will obviously also try to sort themselves out at the same time and the other match yesterday saw Belbroughton beat Droitwich and jump two places off the bottom.

In Division two, leaders Enville have been cut back to just a single point as they took 20 from a win at Alvechurch and Netherton got 24 from their trip to Worcester Dominies. Third stand Bromyard who beat Coombs Wood and Pershore’s youngsters remain 4th following a comfortable win over Lye. In other games Worcester bear Feckenham and Harborne overcame Oldswinford.

Division three 2nd XI leaders Burghill are now 34 points clear as they comfortable beat 4th placed Burghill. Bartestree’s Wilf Munn, 14, scored his maiden ton making 124 in his side’s big win over Harvington which has taken them above their visitors.

Avoncroft beat Alveley; Wormelow had a winning draw with Himley which included 168 not out from 21 year old Matt Deem. The Ahmed brothers both scored centuries for Claverley in their win at home to Chaddesley and Chay Ankers took 5-16 at Romsley who collapsed to 59 all out.

Division four 2nds leaders Martley lost at Bromsgrove and so surrendered the lead to their rivals. Kidderminster are third after having their match conceded and the Ovs are 4th following a win over Halesowen. Five ways are appropriately fifth 3 points behind Ovs after a convincing win over Tenbury and Old Hill and Ross on Wye recorded victories against Cleobury Mortimer and Himbleton respectively.

Division five 2nds – Stourport beat Kempsey to stay in front of Barnards Green who had a win at Hallow and Stourbridge beat Old Elizabethans comfortably to stay 3rd.

West Malvern won at Barnt Green and Hanley Castle eclipsed Astwood Bank.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In Division six, Canon Frome have pulled slightly ahead of Birlingham after a big win over 8 man Stone which included a century for Alec Backhouse. They now lead Birlingham by six points after they had a very close draw at Chaddesley with bottom side Netherton after the “home side” made 199-9 in 45 and closed on 192-8 in their own overs.

Ombersley are 3rd after beating Rushwick, Cutnall Green are 4th following a win at Highley and Harborne won at Droitwich.

Division seven is still very close after Nomads slipped to 3rd place at Redditch allowing Worcester who beat Malvern and Hagley who beat Enville to overtake them by 2 and 1 points respectively. In mid-table, Pershore thrashed Pershore and overtook them and Belbroughton had their game conceded.

Division eight leaders Evesham strengthened their position by beating Bewdley and Colwall who beat Bromyard are 16 points behind them in 2nd. Harborne jumped from last after they beat Kidderminster and Dominies are now last losing to Cookley.

Division nine leaders Redditch had a 4th match conceded to them, the most in any Division, and Enville are 9 points behind after a win at Bredon. Five ways stand 3rd after having their game conceded and Alvechurch conceded to Feckenham.
