So what did you do on back to the future night?

Old Leamingtonians invited the local Warwick University rugby team down to show them there is a rugby future after university by playing at your local club.

With the hype of the Rugby World Club both teams have seen an increase in women wanting to give rugby a try, this was a perfect opportunity for Warwick to give their fresher’s exposure in a controlled and friendly training match against Old Leamingtonians Ladies.

Many of Old Leam’s experienced players didn’t play or played out of position to support newer players. Old Leam’s Captain “Jen Vermeulen” explained why “tonight is about getting all our new players on the pitch and give them and Warwick Uni that Sunday match day feeling. Rugby is a physical game and playing your first league game can be very exciting but also daunting for new players, nights like these are great fun and builds confidence in new players.

Warwickshire Referee “Dulcie Hardwick” blew the whistle for the kick off , both teams had big smiles on their faces looking to enjoy their first taste of a rugby match.

New to rugby Shannon and old hat Jamielee got Old Leams off to a flying start both scoring tries. As the early stages of the game progressed the Warwick Uni ladies grew in confidence and their hard work paid off with tries from, Tiff, Harry and Gail for Warwick putting the ball over the line.

The true spirit of rugby shone through as with every tackle and try Warwick made or scored Old Leam’s would congratulate them, the more experienced players passed on the rugby knowledge especially in the dark arts of scrum.

Both teams were evenly matched and the game turned into a fantastic game of rugby for a Wednesday night. Old Leams new player Harriet scored her first try with a fantastic run down the pitch side stepping tackles. The game resulted in a win for Old Leams but the real outcome of the evening was the chance for both teams to work together to improve their game.

It was fantastic to see the link between Old Leamingtonians and Warwick Uni staying strong, and the start of a world cup legacy, all the ladies had a fantastic evening. There are plans for future training session for the Warwick Ladies with Old Leamingtonians to keep the link between the two teams as strong as it has been in recent years.

If you fancy giving rugby a try new players are always welcome to training on Monday & Training is Wednesday nights 7.30 - 9pm, our dedicated coaching staff and friendly atmosphere will guarantee a great place to play rugby.
