Both teams have to be congratulated for producing an excellent contest in very difficult conditions. Recent weather had left the pitch very heavy and there was little or no bounce. All of the players will feel their legs after this one.

Brocton made a dream start with Sean Kinsella running on to a ball into the box from Paul McMahon to slot home. It could have been worse for the home side when McMahon was nearly found in a prime position with a pass from Dave Ablewhite from the right, but this time it was a little heavy and home keeper Den Gough was able to gather. Gough played the ball out quickly and long and this time it was Calum Barrett for Brocton making the save.

On the quarter hour Kinsella chipped the ball into the box and this time McMahon just failed to reach the ball with his head as Gough claimed gratefully. He needed two attempts to gather the next attempt, this one from Dan Lomas after McMahon had chested the ball into his path.

Whilst Brocton their narrow lead they were reminded the game was far from over, Barton were always dangerous in and around the box and a free kick was headed away by Ed Booth and returned with power but wide of the mark by Sam Moore,. Brocton continued to make chances though and Dave Berks skipped through into the box after a one two with Lomas, before releasing McMahon for a chip over Gough but on to the bar. Then Josh Wilson got to the bye line on the left and put in a tempting cross, winning a corner. Berks whipped it in and McMahon brought a smart save from Gough, who was up quickly to deny Kinsella’s follow up.

Before the close of the half though a rare slip by Matt Docherty threatened to let in Steve Chaplin, but player –manager Dave Berks made a timely tackle to snuff out the danger.

Chaplin was on the score sheet soon after the break though as a free kick, punched away by Barrett, was dinked  back across the goal for Chaplin to nod home.

Brocton came under some pressure then, but they weathered that period and when Berks was replaced by Jack Edwards, it was Edwards who quickly found himself in shooting position. Gough parried this one, but Edwards was soon in on goal again. This time he beat the keeper but a fine bit of defensive covering saw the ball nipped off the line.

A quick Bardon Hill break saw Moore jinking right into the heart of the Brocton box. He chose to go left though and when he shot, could only find the side netting.

It was a let off which Ablewhite was soon to punish, converting the 71st minute penalty with composure after Edwards had been tripped in Bardon’s box. The fine away display was completed when late substitute Matt Dean came on and almost immediately got himself a goal to seal the points at 1-3 on 84 minutes
