The 2014/15 Season was finally completed this morning and it ended with success for Bartley Green Illey Sunday (BGIS) who claimed the Division 2 title after a 4-1 win over Chaddesley Corbett, the team that went into the match with a one point lead, meaning BGIS needed to win or they would end up as runners-up.
A decent crowd of just under 50 had assembled for this match, including five ground hoppers and Chadds had a golden chance to get off the mark inside 25 seconds. Dan Mcrozkowski found himself one on one with Aaron Collins after the BGIS backline was sliced open but Collins stuck out a hand to deny what looked a certain goal. Chadds had settled very well and it was no surprise when they did open the scoring after 10 minutes. Ryan Moore played a fine ball over to makeshift striker Damian Ash who skillfully flicked the ball home. Chadds were completely dominant at this stage and looked in determined mood, but BGIS finally woke up in the 21st minute to equalise; Jordi Strevz's cross was headed home by BGIS top scorer Dominic Strevens which was actually a fine finish of the highest Bromsgrove League quality. Chadds nearly went back in front on 26 when a suicidal backpass was nearly pounced upon by Moore but Collins got there to clear in the nick of time. On 27, BGIS went in front; Steve Mcglen put a delicious cross in from the right wing and Colin Tandy may or may not have got a touch to it but either way it ended up in the corner of the net. BGIS were in the ascendency now and in the 40th minute, Chadds defender Adam Simpson cleared up after Strevens had beaten Chris Crook to the ball well outside his penalty area. Disaster struck for Chadds just before half-time as BGIS scored a killer third; A defensive mistake led to Tandy finding Carl Martin and the Step 5 non-league player fired home a lethal shot into the corner of the net. H-T Chadds 1 BGIS 3.
Into the second half and after an incredible half-time rollocking from Chadds assistant manager Matthew Fludgate, Chadds did come out strongly in the second period with fire in their belly. Their first chance to pull one back came when youngster Rocco Mitchell hit a superb 25 yard free kick which looked to be going in until Collins's acrobatics kept it out. However the expected onslaught never really materialised and BGIS played out the half fairly comfortably. Tandy hit the bar on 66 and then a minute later, BGIS got the fourth when Crook pulled off a fine reflex save but was powerless as Danny Lawrence lashed home the rebound from close range. Richard Ash had the last chance for Chadds on 82 minutes but he shot wide and they ended up with the result they they did not want which confirmed them as runners-up - Still a fine start to their Bromsgrove League career as well as bagging the Centenary Cup and reaching the County Cup final!
Many congratulations though to BGIS on a fine season and for winning the title today in style, indeed at the final whistle today was the only time this season they have been at the top of the table! It was also a fine advert for the League played in great whinge-free spirits, Chadds more than played their part and on a pitch of the highest quality, never have we seen a pitch look in such good condition at this time of year; A credit to the Groundsman!
So all that is left is for the Sunday Reporting Team is to say 'Thank You' for reading during the season and we'll be back on Sunday 09th August 2015 which is the first day of the new season!
