Old Leamingtonians Ladies RFC recorded their biggest win of the season this weekend, winning 82-0 at home to Wellingborough Ladies RFC

Old Leams got off to a flying start, kicking off to Wellingborough. The ball was immediately won back by Carrie MacDonald, it went out to the backs, and centre Tasha Barnes scored her first try of the day.

It didn’t take long for the team to score again. Old Leams won a scrum against the head, and the ball came out to Jamielee McCreadie, playing her first game at 10. Her fancy footwork took her under the posts to score, and number 8 Dulcie Hardwick converted to put Old Leams 12-0 up. Another try for Barnes and another conversion from Hardwick put Old Leams 19-0 up within the first 10 minutes.

The tries kept coming thick and fast. Barnes scored next, completing her hat trick in record time, and the bonus point for scoring five tries was secured by her fellow centre Shannon Lynch, whose try took Old Leams to a 29-0 lead.

The next try for Old Leams came from the wing, with Lucy Gaydon scoring in the corner. Before the half time whistle blew there was a fourth try for Barnes and a second for McCreadie, both of which were converted by Hardwick taking Old Leams into the break with a 48-0 lead.

Wellingborough did not allow their heads to drop, and Old Leams had to fight harder to get past them in the second half.  The first try of that half came from flanker Liz Kennedy, who capitalised on the hard work of the back line to pop up on the wing and score in the corner.  This was quickly followed by Barnes’ fifth try, putting the score at 60-0.

Gaydon was next to score, chasing down a great kick from full back Vicky Lewis. In the final minutes of the game there was a further flurry of tries. Captain Jen Vermeulen got herself on the score sheet, and Gaydon completed her hat trick having moved to the centres for the final few minutes.

Hardwick finished the match in spectacular style; some strong running and a selfless pass from prop Kate Sweatman set her up perfectly, and she ran half the length of the pitch to make the final score 82-0 to Old Leams.

The sun shone on Old Leamingtonians Ladies RFC last Saturday, as the club's first women's rugby taster session was a huge success. Current club players were joined by lots of new faces, many of whom had never played before, for a great afternoon of skills and games.  Several of these new players enjoyed themselves so much they've officially joined the team, and we're delighted to welcome them to the OLs family. The ladies experienced the social side of rugby as well, tucking into a well deserved post-rugby barbecue.

If you've been inspired by the England women's world cup victory this weekend, or just fancy trying something different, it's not too late to join in. We love to see new players at any point in the season, whether they're experienced or complete beginners. Find us on Facebook or Twitter, or email us at olswrfc@googlemail.com, and get involved with a fantastic, fun and friendly sport.
