Bretforton Ladies 1sts picked up their first win of the season last Saturday against Wotton-under-Edge and earned themselves three points to move off the bottom of the table.

Wotton put pressure on the visitors from the very start and were unlucky to score in the opening minutes of the game with a quick break from the off.

Both teams found it hard to get into the game to begin with, with rash tackles leaving two of the Bretforton players cautioned, and consequently sin-binned, in quick concession. Wotton looked to take advantage of the visitors’ missing players, and were unfortunate not to find the back of the net and themselves first to score.

With a full team back on the pitch, the first goal for Bretforton came shortly after. An accurate short corner drag out by Dani Cox and a fantastic strike from Tess Lewinton from the edge of the ‘D’ was one that the Wotton defence and keeper could only watch fly by.

Wotton answered the visitors’ goal shortly after with one of their own; a shot on goal that flew high and was deflected in for an own goal off Emma Lowe’s head.

With the scores level, both teams battled to break the deadlock, but it was another goal from Bretforton before half time that put the visiting team ahead - another fabulous goal from Lewinton who, despite the tight angle, found a gap in the Wotton keeper’s reach and made the score 2-1.

The second half saw some good linking from the Wotton team, who were only denied an equaliser through some solid defending from the Bretforton team, including Jane Wheeler who again had a great game at left-back.

The visitors managed to hold on to a win through sheer want and determination, something that Lisa Workman in midfield was instrumental in maintaining and Bretforton were unlucky to increase their goal lead with some outstanding runs up the right hand side from their young winger.

Bretforton are looking for another win as they play hosts to Gloucester 2s this weekend, 10.30am at De Montfort School.
