Northampton Saints 2

Bretforton Ladies Masters 5

Bretfortons Ladies Master hockey team have made it through to the England Hockey quarter finals of the over 35’s National Shield Competition – their first foray into the last 8 of any competition & a tremendous achievement.

This looked like being a tough encounter for the Bret Ladies, Northampton having a dedicated veteran’s team within their club.  However, it was to be the away side that broke the deadlock of a tough first half when Sarah Hall latched onto a loose ball in the D and fired Bret ahead.

Not to be outdone, Northants then scored a cracker themselves & all was square.  Julie Hall decided to get on the scoresheet & scored a really important goal to put the visitors ahead going into the break.

The second half saw an awesome display of hockey from Bret – no more horsing around – they literally blew the opposition away.  Although Northants came out aggressively at the start, a break from Bret saw Lisa Workman place an inch perfect pass to Sarah Hall who smacked the ball into the net.  The Vale team continued to pressure and it didn’t take them long to add a fourth goal – another fabulous pass from Workman found Andrea Cole in the D and her sliding effort defied her age !!

The midfield and forward lines were now linking brilliantly – great passing moves between Deb Slatter, Sarah Bragg and Sally Beale saw Beale slot home for her goal – a cool reverse stick effort that the Northants keeper could only watch as it hit the backboard.

The score line also shows the hard work & diligence of the Bret defence, Jane Wheeler, Blanche Surman, Tess Lewinton and Sophie Hamilton in a thoroughly miserly mood – hardly allowing a ball through all game.

The ladies now have the away tie they wanted – a tough trip to Carlisle (of all places) on the 28th February will see both teams going for a place in the semi-final draw and a step nearer playing at the Lee Valley Stadium in the Olympic Park.

With massive thanks for Karen Porter for travelling and umpiring – very much appreciated and also their vociferous supporters – the Strongbow Twins !!
