Bretforton cruise up the M6 to pass Carlisle into the Semi Final of the England Hockey O35's Masters Shield!

Carlisle Ladies 3 - 3 Bretforton Ladies Masters (Bretforton win on penalties)

The Vales Pink Ladies veteran team travelled up North to take on Carlisle for the quarter final of England Masters O35’s National Shield Competition on Sunday.

The first half saw Bretforton being put under pressure by a good attacking Carlisle team who were awarded many short corners. After a quick break Bretforton then caught Carlisle napping and they took this opportunity to put Carlisle's defence under pressure resulting in Bretforton being awarded a short corner. Sophie Hamilton stepped up to the mark executing the ball nicely into the bottom right with help of a defensive deflection firing the vale side into the lead.

The intensity of the game rose with Bretforton's defence being put under extreme aggressive pressure. Experienced veterans Jane Wheeler, Blanche Surman, Sophie Hamilton and Tessa Lewinton continued to all keep themselves composed taking on the big guns of Carlisle. The equaliser then came by an unmarked Carlisle defender neatly slipping the ball past Brets keeper.

Rolling forwards Sarah Hall, Deb Slatter and Sarah Bragg gelled well together creating chances keeping the northern girls on their toes.

Second half saw a more determined and confident Bretforton showing their skills through good distribution of the ball in midfield. Old skool midfielders Lisa Workman, Sally Beale, Julie Hall and Dani Cox all linked up well providing some slick through balls to the forwards creating many opportunities. After Carlisle's array of short corners it was now Bretforton's turn to be awarded one. Deb Slatter swiftly dragged the ball out to Lisa Workman who dribbled and crossed the ball back into Slatter waiting patiently on the post to catch a deflection off Carlisle's keeper slipping it nicely under her feet making it 2-1 for the visitors.

Carlisle's luck of short corners continued as they finally converted one with a superb strike to level the game!

The pressure continued to build as the clock was ticking into the last ten minutes until Carlisle's keeper made an unavoidable error resulting in Bretforton being awarded a penalty flick! Unruffled Hamilton again stepped up to smoothly tuck the ball in the bottom right giving Carlisle's keeper no chance, putting Bretforton back in the game!

With two minutes to go Bretforton were leading 3-2. The flat cap Northerner’s battled through right to the end and pulled the game back level from yet another short corner!

Umpires blew the full time whistle taking both teams into a dramatic penalty shoot out to decide the game.

Bretforton's keeper Vicky Watkins made three outstanding saves & Tessa Lewinton coolly stepped up to seal the score 3-2 and take Bretforton through into the semi finals.

The ladies now have a home draw they wanted in the semi’s – on the 13th March V either London based side Wapping HC or Norwich City HC will see either teams going for a place in the final playing at the Lee Valley Stadium in the Olympic Park on 30th April.

With massive thanks to legend Tessa Lewinton for driving us there safely and our 'strongbow triplets' supporters cheering us all the way!
