Bretforton V Old Bristolians

Bretforton Ladies played hosts to last year’s Northern Division League runners up Old Bristolians for the first game of the new season. Bret were desperate to start the season well and put lasts years disappointing campaign behind them.

Both teams started well sharing the possession in the early stages but it wasn’t long before the deadlock was broken, a quick break and some neat inter passing through the home team’s defence and the ball was in the net, 1-0 to the visitors. The home team replied almost immediately when Hannah Dufty drove down the right hand side and flicked the ball towards Julie Hall who took the ball waist high to slap home the equaliser, parity however was only short lived as Old Bristolians short sharp passing split the home team defence again for a second goal and a third followed leaving the home team trailing 1-3.  This should have been game over but the home team showed great team spirit and replied with a well worked short corner routine, Danni Cox fed the ball in to Alice Cook who slapped the ball back to Cox on the post who pushed the ball home to reduce the deficit.

The home team pushed for the equaliser and came close on several times from short corners but the visitors held on to go in at the break 3-2 in front.

The second half was as competitive as the first with both teams creating some great opportunities, Dufty and Cook’s pace down both flanks continued to cause problems for the visitors defence as the home team searched for the equaliser, just Bretforton looked to getting back in the game the visitors scored 2 goals from well worked routines to give them breathing space at 5-2. Bretforton beaten but not dispirited,  pushed forward and came close to reducing the score line with the last short corner of the match when Cox again found herself with the scoring opportunity only for the ball to strike the wrong side of the post
