A perfect afternoon saw two well matched sides battle for scraps in front of goal in a match largely dominated by organised defences. A long pass from captain for the day Calum Barrett, in goal for Brocton, reached Dan Lomas on the left touchline. He slipped the ball to Dominic Dell and Dell fired in a cross which was too strong for either defence to clear or attack to turn in.

Dave Ablewhite then provided a tempting free kick which Ed Booth got a firm head to but only found a well placed keeper in Lee Evans. Booth was needed at the other end as the lively Corey Carrithers put in a dangerous cross only for Booth to clear over his own bar.

The end to end nature of the game was summed up when Charlie Jones intercepted in midfield giving the ball to Dell, who could only shoot wide and immediately Barrett produced a double save at the other end to keep out first Harry Harris and then Toumani Sidibe.

Wood took the ascendancy towards the end of the half with good link up between Jamie Hawkins and Sidibe on the left. The eventual cross was headed clear for a corner and that was swung out over the bar and then Sidibe got to the bye line and only a timely tackle by Booth prevented a strike at goal.

The best opportunity though came when Wood broke directly after stopping a Brocton attack and created a 3 on 2 situation at the heart of Brocton’s defence. Carithers was through and slipped the ball at the last moment for Drew Aiton, only for Barrett to smother the attempt.

Wood started the second period with similar probes as Harris had a shot blocked and Sidibe was stopped by a fine tackle from Ablewhite as he shaped to shoot.

But Brocton were still in the hunt with Dan Lomas almost finishing off a move that he started. He swung the ball from left to right wings and then headed at goal from Dave Berks’ return from the right. Evans did well to keep it out. A Berks free kick just cleared all the big men in the box and Lomas dragged his effort just wide at the far post.

Wood had Brocton under pressure in their own  box but a quick break by the Badgers ended with Dell one on one with Evans, but the experienced Wood keeper came out on topas he smothered Dell’s goal attempt

Just as it seemed unlikely that either team would score a heavy cross from the left seemed to have gone safe but a misplaced header in the Brocton’s defence put the ball back into the danger area and worse, played Harry Harris on side. He tapped home gratefully to give the visitors a 73rd minute lead.

As the game moved into stoppage time it looked as if Wood had weathered the storm as the Badgers had fought hard to get back on terms  but then a peach of a cross from Dell was met and converted by an equally good header into the top corner from substitute Ben Farrall on 93 minutes.
