A late winner from Jack Edwards saw Brocton pick up a vital 3 points against a Tipton Town side who once boasted Steve Bull amongst their ranks but are currently struggling near the foot of the Midland Football League Premier Division.

However it was Tipton’s Mark Ganderton who got off the first real shot on goal smartly saved by Calum Barrett. This was followed by some concerted pressure from the Badgers with Dave Berks and Sam Bell combining down the left to win a corner. Then came a series of free kicks from dangerous positions as Brocton pressed forward. Berks’ first effort was beaten away by the wall, but the ball was recycled and another foul committed. This time Berks put his shot wide of the wall and inside the post with Matt Martin beaten the Badgers had their noses in front.

Brocton continued to probe by switching play from side to side and generally keeping close control, but when Tipton got good numbers to pressure on the ball and won it, their counter was swift and decisive. It was made more so by excellent forward play by Sean Pugh, who held up the ball when played into him and was a constant threat running all across the front line and darting off the shoulder of the last defender. Only the industry of Carl Morris and Charlie Jones at the heart of Brocton’s midfield prevented the service to him being too good.

It was one such run by Pugh, holding off close attention from Dave Ablewhite that led to Tipton’s equaliser. Charlie Jones came over to help, but the ball was prodded beyond the two Brocton men to Mark Ganderton, who had found himself some space. He picked his spot and Barrett stood no chance.

Brocton had the better of the remaining chances in the half with Dan Lomas hitting over as he had to stretch for a Gary Fife cross and then Fife doing the same as the ball fell to him after a bout of head tennis in and around the visitors’ box. Sam Bell completed an industrious half with a similarly difficult stretch and miss after a cross from Fife which completed good link up play between Jamie Evans and Berks. Brocton were reminded that there were two teams in this game just before the break when Ganderton headed over when centrally placed in Brocton’s box.

Both sides fancied the win from this game and it made for an entertaining spectacle as first one then the other looked sure to score. It was the heroics of Matt Martin which kept out Brocton with fine saves from Berks and then twice more from Fife, but Barrett in Brocton’s goal also needed to show similar skills to keep out Tipton efforts as the game drew to a close. Tiptons’ keeper must have begun to believe he would not be beaten but right at the death substitute Jack Edwards

turned in a shot from the heart of the visitors’ box to grab the points from an entertaining match
