Last season finished on a real high for the first full year of the Burton on Trent RFC Academy.

Success in Cups and leagues saw the Academy sides playing right until the end of the season. As one group makes that successful step up to senior rugby, another two join the Academy for the coming season and this season the addition of the Under 16s, to be known as 'The Stags', is an exciting prospect for the Academy.

Strength and conditioning training started early and this has been building to the start of full contact training. The numbers of Academy players turning up has been extremely high and the guest coach, John Widdowson, Nottingham Academy Director has been impressed with the number and quality of the sessions. He will continue to give guest sessions during the season alongside Leicester Academy coach Tosh Askew.

Tomorrow the U23 Team will be playing in the Wasps RFC Invitational 10s tournament. Burton were extremely proud to receive an invitation into the  tournament which includes teams from Wasps,London Irish,Worcester and London Scottish. Team manager [censored] Titley said " The invitation into this competition is not only a reflection on the great way that the Academy has developed but also gives the club the opportunity to bring back many of our ex-colts and other players who have left home to either go to University or work elsewhere. We have even been invited to join Wasps Rugby Club with putting together a joint Barbarians team which is going to be a great challenge for our young players"

All of this pre-season activity is all leading to the traditional pre-season training weekend at Harper Adams University. This year the Academy will take between 70 and 80 players, their ages range from 16 to 19.
