The Badgers suffered their 2nd reverse in 4 days going down by the odd goal in seven in a scrappy game at Causeway United. On the positive side, Brocton were able to give debuts to Jack Edwards and Thomas Vaughan, both of whom did enough to recommend        themselves for further chances at least. Another substitute appearance from Josh Wilson once again showed that he is comfortable at this level.

Sam Bell returned to the side and rode two tackles to put in a tempting cross early on. It was however deflected behind Dave Berks who was in the area and poised to strike. Causeway seemed undeterred by the near miss and nearly turned it to their advantage as they broke down to the other end and had Calum Barrett, in Brocton’s goal, needing to turn a shot for a corner.

The pattern for the game was set with end to end breaks often being set up by misplaced passes from either side. Jack Edwards got Brocton off to a good start, converting from just such a break and putting the visitors one ahead on 12 minutes after a Bell cross could not be held by home keeper Matt Sidaway. The lead did not last long though as a mix up in the centre of the Badgers’ box saw the ball looped off the head of Brocton defender Matt Dockerty and over an unsuspecting Barrett into the net.

The home side were naturally lifted and the already speedy game became almost               frenetic in its pace. Brocton were unable to get their passing going as the play went longer and longer.

Still Brocton had chances and Sidaway saved with his legs after a corner and Edwards struck wide from the rebound. Then Dockerty saw his header flash wide after a Dave Berks free kick. Causeway broke at pace again though and Barrett was left stranded as Spencer Blockham raced past the Brocton back line onto a pass and lobbed him for the lead. Plenty of bodies behind the ball then prevented Brocton from pulling level as Gary Fife and then Edwards each had shots blocked before a well constructed break to the right and quick cross left Brocton struggling. The ball was cleared twice but a fine               volley from Josh March put the home side two goals ahead.

An equally fine volley from Berks early in the second half brought Brocton back in      contention but once again a loose pass in midfield put Causeway through and left               Brocton back pedalling. Dave Ablewhite was left sliding in to tackle as Brocton’s goal was exposed, but missed the ball and a penalty was awarded. Matt Gardener put a beauty inside the post despite a fine attempt by Barrett to save.

The non stop running of March left him with cramp and the home keeper  got himself sent off as he kicked out in frustration at Brocton not putting the ball out of play.             Substitute keeper Steve Cadwallader was then unable to stop a scrambled effort for Brocton which Fife claimed and in the dying moments Fife had two more gilt edged chances. The first was almost perfect as he lifted the ball over the keeper only to see it drift wide and the second squirmed away from him as he met a Paul McMahon cross with the goal at his mercy. It was simply not his or Brocton’s night.
