All four members of the Charles family enjoyed a run of success at Wales and West show ground this weekend. But it was win! win! win! for Harry Charles.

16 year old Harry, current Junior European individual silver and team bronze medallist , was on flying form during the Welsh Masters, winning the Martin Collins Grand Prix on Sunday afternoon with his relatively new ride the promising 9 year old Strides Controe. Relegating his father Peter, London 2012 gold medallist, to second place.

What proved to be a testing first round for many competitors left just five combinations to contest the jump off. Peter riding John Robert’s Stapleton Mist was second in and produced a super round to finish in 37.46. Following closely behind, Harry riding the light and agile Strides Controe made short work of the 1.50m track to put in a cracking clear in 35.85 seconds.

Proving mature for his age Strides Controe started his career with eventer Laura Collett, ‘I took him to Spain a couple of weeks ago and pretty much threw him in at the deep end but he coped really well’ said Harry.

‘I knew there was only one person in the class who could beat me! Really pleased with Harry’s performance today’, said Peter. ‘Laura brought Controe to the yard to try and I thought he had so much potential.’

David Broome said, ‘He went superbly. His horse jumped very well, he rode it brilliantly and he beat his dad, which was no mean achievement.’

Harry’s run of luck began on Saturday when he won the Gents Final with his Junior European ride Vivaldi du Dom finishing in 40.33 just a fraction of a second ahead of Michael Furedonn's time of 40.37.

Scarlett and Sienna almost made a clean sweep of the Ladies but were pipped at the post by Jane Annett. Finishing with a 2nd place for 13 year old Sienna riding Chaitanya with a time of 42.37 and 3rd place going to 15 year old Scarlett riding Sacree du Rouet finishing in 42.85.
