North Midlands Under-18s were edged out 8-7 by Warwickshire in their opening match of the season at Webb Ellis Road, Rugby last night.

Despite losing a number of key players to AASE League commitments with Worcester Sixth Form College a young North Midlands side produced a tenacious display that rattled a Warwickshire side that had already played Staffordshire.

An early try also helped to settle North Midlands with prop James Page (Malvern College and Worcestershire) launching a counter-attack, after Warwickshire turned over possession, which produced a well-taken try for centre Lewis Suckling (Ellesmere College and Shropshire).

Fly-half Luke White (Bromsgrove School  and Worcestershire) added the conversion which looked like being an important kick when Warwickshire failed to improve their try scored by right wing James Neal five minutes later.

But Warwickshire fly-half Jamie Shillcock found the target with a penalty eight minutes into the second half and that proved to be the final score of free-flowing and entertaining tussle.

Both sides made handling errors under pressure from some resolute tackling and the North Midlands pack held up well against some bigger Warwickshire forwards.

Scrum-half Brandon Wain (King’s School Worcester and Worcestershire) proved a handful for Warwickshire’s defence but crucial passes were fumbled and when North Midlands were awarded a penalty that appeared to be within White’s range they opted to kick for touch rather than goal.

North Midlands Under-18s play Staffordshire at Stourbridge in their next county match on October 23 (7.30pm).
