North Midlands limbered up for this season’s National Under-20 Championship with a comfortable 31-5 win over arch-rivals Warwickshire at Bromsgrove’s Finstall Park this evening.

The win followed victory over Berkshire in their opening warm-up match last month and will have put North Midlands in good heart for their opening Championship match against Notts, Lincs & Derbyshire at Derby on February 7.

North Midlands made eight changes to the squad that did so well against Berkshire to give those that were unavailable for that match the chance to impress the selectors.

A composed performance against a lively Warwickshire side created some selection headaches for the NLD match with North Midlands scoring five tries and conceding just one.

The opener came after five minutes when full-back Alex Gibson (Birmingham Exiles) dotted down from close range but dogged Warwickshire defence frustrated North Midlands until the final play of the first half.

Then left wing Will Ford (Hereford) showed his paces after he was put in space and raced away for the first of two smart individual tries.

Ford showed pace and sparkling footwork when he jinked through again four minutes into the second period for the try that settled North Midlands.

Flanker Ben Vincent (Harper Adams University) rewarded a lengthy period of pressure when he was driven over from a line out before Warwickshire rallied briefly with a breakaway try.

But North Midlandshad the final say when lock Sam Knott (Worcester University and Luctonians) crashed through for the final try. Fly-half Ben Phillips (Birmingham & Solihull) converted two of the tries and Caron Rees of Harper Adams University improved the final try.
