North Midlands launched their National Under-20 Championship campaign with a hrad-earned 39-34 win over East Midlands at Moseley today.

The postponement of their scheduled opening match against Notts, Lincs & Derbyshire meant that North Midlands had to kick their heels for three weeks and their preparations were further disrupted by the withdrawal of eight members of their selected squad.

Two penalties from Birmingham & Solihull’s Matt Dight helped to settle North Midlands and a try from lock Sam Nott (Luctonians and Worcester University) further stretched their lead.

But North Midlands then conceded two tries in quick succession to a well-organised East Midlands which forced them to regroup.

They did so successfully by scoring 21 points before half time with number eight Jake Guildford (Edwardians and Birmingham University) scoring two tries and openside flanker Ben Vincent of Harper Adams University scoring another.

Dight converted all three of those tries and his accuracy was to prove vital in the final analysis as East Midlands rallied strongly in the second half and reduced the deficit to just three points at one stage.

North Midlands required a second converted try from Nott late on to secure a maximum points win and hold off East Midlands’ spirited challenge.

North Midlands will play their rearranged pool match against NLD at Derby on March 6 (2.15pm).
