Coventry Sphinx  8  Brocton  0

Saturday August 13th 2016

Barely had breath been drawn before Sphinx, kicking off and passing the ball neatly but unchallenged, got right to the heart of the Brocton area and scored through Daniel Douse.

Brocton could have opened their own scoring from the resulting kick off as Jack Edwards was put through only to blast his effort wide of the target. The home side showed how to do it only moments later when Mitch Thomason won himself a free kick and converted it to put two on the board in little more than five minutes.

One side was clearly buoyed by success, the other befuddled at what was happening, because on 12 minutes Danny Harris was able to close down quickly, win an easy tackle and go on to score his sides’ third..

Dominic Dell, for Brocton got himself to the bye line, but his cross into the box was to a defender and Edwards needed a lung busting run back into his own half to prevent further damage.

Before twenty minutes it was 4 - 0 as Ben Taylor was harassed at the back and eventually robbed, giving his tormentor Thomason time to pick his spot for his personal second and his team’s fourth.

Brocton rallied a little and held the score until half time, even coming up with another golden chance of their own when a through pass from Berks gave Dell a one on one with home keeper Scott Dutton. It summed up Brocton’s day when Dell lobbed Dutton only to see his effort go wide.

The second half reflected some ringing ears in Brocton’s team as the effort and tempo improved and this time 12 minutes without conceding was reached. The fortunes in front of goal were no better though as a fine diagonal ball from Sean Kinsella was met with a fine volley after a good dart into the box by Dan Lomas. It was skied over the bar.

A flighted cross from the Sphinx right flank had Calum Barrett scrambling and he was relieved to see it out with a touch for a corner. A short one two though and a cross saw Thomason bag his hat trick with a deft flicked header. Now seemingly on a high, Thomason pressed, won the ball and scored his fourth before the Sphinx bench decided to rest him. Teenagers Keenan Powell and Callum Head joining the fray for Brocton and neither of the youngsters let themselves down.

Brocton then created a series of chances. Matt Skinner scored only to be given off side, having run through. Dan Lomas worked a chance for himself, but once again struck over. Edwards had a shot ricochet into the keepers hands. Ben Taylor headed down and brought a fine save and Callum Head chipped keeper and bar.

Sphinx absorbed this and then showed how to do it with a simple slide pass through Brocton’s defence and simple tap in after a timely run from sub Ryan Harkin. A final penalty almost on time converted by fellow sub Dayle Kenny completed the Badgers’ miserable afternoon.
