Two second half tries from wing Matt Dight helped North Midlands begin their preparations for this season’s National Under-20 Championship with a 20-19 win over a well-drilled Berkshire at Dudley Kingswinford today.

Dight, of Birmingham & Solihull, struck first midway through the second half then snatched victory in the final minute when he rounded off a period of sustained pressure after North Midlands had switched the direction of attack.

The win avenged a heavy defeat by Berkshire in the build up to last season’s National Under-20 Championship and will have put North Midlands in good heart for their next warm-up match against Warwickshire at Bromsgrove on January 11.

But it took a new-look North Midlands squad, selected from a dozen different clubs, a long time to break down Berkshire despite the early initiative of a try from number eight Jake Gifford (Edwardians) from a line out catch-and-drive.

Berkshire were soon level again when they responded with an unconverted try but North Midlands regained the lead, albeit briefly, when Edwardians fly-half Joe O’Hehir rounded off a confident handling move which started on their own line.

Two converted tries before the break allowed Berkshire to take a nine points lead into the second half but they then had to defend doggedly to repel North Midlands who struggled to turn pressure and possession into more points.

Persistence was rewarded when Dight crossed for his first try and there was delight when the young wing found his way over again right at the death.
