Southam United came from a goal down to take the lead against Atherstone Town, only to be pegged back by the visitors near the end, having to settle for a 2-2 draw.

Without a match last week, Southam United were looking to bounce back after their heavy defeat at leaders Brocton at the end of December.

Manager Lee Knibbs gave starts to 22 year-old defender Ricky Hill, signed on a dual registration from Coventry Sphinx, and midfielder Leigh Phillips, who has returned to the club from Racing Club Warwick.

Town took the lead three minutes before half time when the referee awarded a penalty for a foul by Andy Wilson-King (who was booked) and captain Lee Smith comfortably beat Andrew Skerratt from the spot.

The visitors went down to ten men when Ben Ashby was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 52nd minute, with Phil Smith easily saving Jamie Coleman’s free kick. Robbie Stephens then had a good chance, cutting in from the left, but squared the ball instead of going for goal.

Another foul led to a free kick from Joss Holford and Simeon Smith headed back across the goal for substitute Ryan Caputo to bring Saints level.

The real drama was yet to come, as a flurry of cards from the referee saw both sides lose a player as well as score a goal.

Robbie Stephens sent Saints into the lead for the first time in the match, before Town were reduced to nine men when Steve Olanipekun received two yellow cards in quick succession.

Saints themselves went a man down following a second yellow for Wilson-King and Town then pulled level through Smith, who scored his second of the match.
