Old Leamingtonians  27   -   Spartans  29

Despite scoring five tries against the three OL’s had to settle for a double bonus point defeat in another game that could have been won.

The game kicked off with OL’s defending against a strong wind but took the game to Spartans from the kick off and for the first ten minutes dominated the play but fell behind to a penalty when OL’s were caught offside just inside their own half of the field. Despite the set back against the run of play OL’s continued to run the ball whenever possible and a good period of forward play saw good ground advantage and the ball quickly moved along the line to provide Liam Wellings with a crash ball that saw him cross the line to put OL’s into the lead.  The try was unconverted.

Spartans came back into the game and began to press more into the OL’s half and home side was put on the defensive and the pressure paid off for Spartans when OL’s gave away penalties that were converted by Spartans to extend the lead to 9 – 5 but OL’s came back and following good forward play that pushed Spartans back, second row Sam Went forced his way over to put OL’s back in front but again the conversion was short.

The game continued with Spartans forcing play and OL’s defending but OL’s were finding it difficult to gain ground due to a series of poor clearance kicks that kept giving the ball back to Spartans in midfield and it was only a matter of time before the misdirected clearance kicks provided Spartans with try scoring opportunities which they took twice to touch down, the second a push over try on the stroke of half time.  Both tries were unconverted to give Spartans a half time lead of 22 points to 10.

The second half saw OL’s get the benefit of the strong wind but decided to run the ball at every opportunity.  The forwards were finding it difficult to contain a well drilled Spartans pack but the visitors were having the same difficulties against the wind and it was OL’s that scored next when good forward play deep inside the Spartans 22 saw hooker Guy Ratcliffe go over for another unconverted try and within five minutes a good driving maul saw the same player score again this time with the conversion added to bring OL’s level

OL’s should have gone ahead shortly afterwards when the best three-quarters move of the match saw the ball passed out to winger Dee Ryan who crossed the try line wide out and ran in behind the posts only to have the match official determine that he hadn’t touched the ball down correctly and awarded a 22 meter drop out.

The final 10 minutes saw the game swing from end to end and it looked for all that OL’s would go on to secure the first home win of the season but it was Spartans that scored next with a rolling maul that saw them touch down for a converted try to go seven points into the lead.

OL’s were not finished however and in the final minutes winger Ryan Dee ran in a try from another good three-quarters move to score but with the try again unconverted OL’s had to settle for another close loss but did gain two valuable bonus points.

OL’s visit Old Yards next week - kick off 2.15pm
