Just the four games in the BDFL today, out of a scheduled eight, as the weather bit harder than expected after a deep overnight frost. Good old Charford International came to the rescue though with a double helping of games which kept a few peeps entertained when their games were off, notably FC Rednal, Dipple/Briggs of Studley Railway and Morty our Referees Secretary who manfully attempted to sort out some miscommunication between a club and match officials, more on that later.
The Premier big boys VBG Fairfield and Hare/Hounds got their games played today, both winning with considerable ease. VBG Fairfield's goal difference received a major boost when they took apart AFC Northfield with a simple 12-0 victory. Richard Bishop is in unstoppable form right now and helped himself to another SIX today, to well and truly stamp his authority on the goalscorers chart. Jamie Hatfield got a brace, whilst Daniel Lee Wilkes, Ellis Blakemore, Peter Jenvey and goalkeeper Chris Mole got one each in a completely one sided encounter. You can see footage of some of the goals on VBG Fairfield's Facebook page. Hare and Hounds had things slightly tougher but were still far too good in their 7-2 victory over Golden Lion Athletic; Braces for Josh Westwood and Michael Skerrett, with one each for (the stylish) David Glaze, Luke Dugmore and Ben Dugmore. Hounds brand of football once again received praise from the watching spectators.
In Division Two, Callowbrook Blue are hitting a good patch of form as they won 2-0 away at Awkies Allstars, to avenge the opening day defeat. Differing opinions on social media on who dominated this game but the facts are that a Dan Douse double was enough to secure the 3 points for the Blues. Awkies had earlier had a goal disallowed and missed an absolute sitter. Awkies need to re-discover their early season mojo which has been lacking recently, especially in league matches.
Sporting Rednal (unable to play last weekend due to a County FA imposed suspension) set up an intriguing WA Harris Cup Round 2 tie with VBG Fairfield as they saw off Sporting Grapevine 4-0 in Round 1, beating a Grapes side who appeared to have a xmas hangover. Rednal started the game quickly with long throw ins from Campbell causing problems. Rednal felt they should have gone ahead when Darryl Foster applied pressure to the Grapes keeper who may have caught the ball behind the line but the match officials were unmoved. After Grapes were denied on the break by Tim Cooney in the Rednal goal, Lloyd Newman stepped up with two solo efforts to give the visitors the lead, which would prove to be an unassailable one. The third goal came just before half-time, when Dan Caveney reacted quickest to a rebound and poked the ball home. Super impact sub Anton Gardner-Bennett added a fourth with a fine finish that went in off the post as Grapes ended up looking highly deflated.
That's the match action done with, but this does seem an appropriate time and arena to once again remind everyone that match confirmations are best done on the telephone as electronic communication can not also be relied upon especially at this time of year when work email addresses may not be monitored. Unfortunately a reliance on electronics came back to sting us today as one game went ahead with one assistant only. Everyone who receives a match confirmation, albeit match official or club, is reminded that this MUST be formally acknowledged and if you are the party making the match confirmation, please ensure you get an acknowledgment back from every party you go to confirm with - If you do not get one within 24 hours, please contact league officials for further advice.
Well our next Sunday Report will be in 2015 and hopefully the weather will ease up to allow next week's important matches to go ahead. Happy New Year to you all from everyone in the Sunday Report team!
