U10s at Shipston Mini Festival

by Ben Salcedo

Evesham under 10's travelled to Shipston for the traditional season opener, to play in a mini festival comprising of 2 teams from Shipston and 1 from Claverdon.
With a massive squad of 24 players attending, Evesham fielded two strong teams.
This season brings many new rules and skills for the players to take on board and master. Both the players and coaches have been working hard to prepare for another exciting season.
Evesham Blues showed they had been listening in their first game against Shipston 1, blowing the host team away 9 - 0 including a Will Gilderson hat trick.
Next up for the Blues were Shipston 2. Evesham continued to show they know where the try line is, crossing 8 times. However Shipston scored 5 of their own, in an entertaining game.
Last to face the Blues were Claverdon . This was to prove a classic encounter between two strong teams. Both teams showed great commitment in the tackle and ruck area, restricting the try count to two tries each in a trilling match.
Meanwhile Evesham Maroons also played Shipston 1 in their opening game, also hitting the ground running scoring 6 tries to nil. Hamish Cross grabbing a brace.
Shipston 2 proved to be a tough opponents in the second game Evesham tasted defeat for the first time, going down 3-2.
With legs beginning to tiring, it was decided that Shipston would play one half against Claverdon, and Evesham maroons play the second half. Not an ideal situation, and so it was to prove as Claverdon were on a roll scoring 4 tries to 1.
All the players contributed in some way through the day. With 28 tries scored by 14 different players.
Evesham welcome near neighbours Bredon to Avon Street next Sunday.

Evesham U9s Tackle new rules head on!

by David Snell

Evesham U9s had their first foray into the world of contact rugby at a friendly tournament hosted by Shipston and attended by Stow and Claverdon.

It was an opportunity for the 4 clubs involved to look at the progress of their charges after all the training and hard work that has gone in to prepare them for contact.
Tigers 6-6 Stow
Tigers 4-7 Shipston
Tigers 7-4 Claverdon

Lions 4-3 Stow
Lions 3-6 Shipston
Lions 4-7 Shipston
Lions 3-3 Claverdon
Both Evesham sides got stuck in well from the off and enjoyed a fun morning of rugby on a beautiful autumns day. The Tigers team came away from the day with a win, draw and a loss to show for their efforts. There were some fabulous individual performances and as the morning went on other players began to shine through as they got used to the format of the game.
Laurie Checkley and Abi Lacy picked up exactly where they left off from tagging and marauded around the pitch tackling anything they could get their hands on. Checkley backed up his defensive work with some impressive running scoring a total of 7 tries over the morning. There were notable Evesham debut performances from Tristan Evans-Cook, who ran in a couple of tries and put in a lot of effort around the pitch, and Barney Guy who got stronger and stronger as the morning went on culminating in some good tries.
The Lions side went down to 2 defeats but also notched a win and a draw to show promise as well. The shining stars for them were debutant Miller Willis, whose running posed a threat throughout, Toby Jones who was always in the think of the action and the pace of Edward Thompson, which was apparent throughout. Special mention must go to Tommy Boorman whose all round performances were admirable, including tireless tackling as well as strong running which returned him 5 tries over the morning.
A very enjoyable morning all round and with plenty to give optimism for the season ahead and plenty for the coaches to take back to the training pitch.
