A gloriously sunny day and summer-like temperatures saw the lads run out against Woodrush RFC for their first match of the season. The Woodrush lads looked big, some of them were "very big" and the spectators wondered how our lads would cope. We had no need to worry as within minutes of the kick-off the boys had run in the first of many tries.
Their passing was good, they worked well as a team and Aiden Whilby was a force of nature and all but unstoppable whenever he got the ball, but everyone did their bit, laying the ball back well when tackled, rucking over, passing the ball out down the line and running forward whenever the opportunity to do so presented itself.
Almost all the lads put in crunching tackles when required, won the ball back when mistakes were made and we were 3 tries to nil up at the first break. We were weak when it came to converting the kicks, but the exception was a masterful conversion kick taken by Henry Thomas later in the game from a very acute angle that Jonny Wilkinson himself would have been proud of and he nearly repeated the feat again from a similar position later in the match.
The lads did loose their concentration a little towards the end of the game and this allowed Woodrush to run in some easy tries, but Old Hales quickly re-grouped, worked hard against some very solid defence and came back with some tries of their own.
The final result, a win to Old Hales, 39 - 26 reflected a tough game and an excellent start to the season.
