Within thirty seconds of the start Gary Fife had an opportunity to score.

The ball came to him from a cross by Carl Morris, which was missed by the central defenders of Atherstone, but he headed wide with the keeper stranded. The same player then had a shot from 20 yards but just over the bar.

Brocton were making all the play in the early stages and Carl Morris featured well, but the clearest opportunity fell to Atherstone’s Lee Smith who hit Brocton’s upright after a pin point cross from Mathew Stanley.
Brocton continued to have most of the possession but were lacking in making the most of the opportunities. David Berks on two occasions rounded the Atherstone back line but failed to find an oncoming forward to finish the move. CallumBarrett in Brocton’s goal missed a cross ball which found Simeon Smith, but he was tackled by centre back Matt Dockerty to avert the danger.
Both Dockerty and Rob Tomlinson were commanding in the Brocton defence, and the remainder of the half followed a similar pattern of Brocton possession but no end result.
The second half started with Atherstone pressing forward with the wind behind them. It was from this early pressure that they worked a simple move on the right which found Simeon Smith, who passed to Lee Smith to tap in from five yards.
This spurred Brocton into urgent action and they started to play further up field. They created more opportunities which resulted in several corners but again no result.
Atherstone were always looking dangerous on the break, but it was Brocton who broke up play and counter attacked with a good passing move between midfield and forwards with David Berks to fire in a twelve yard right footed drive to draw the score level on 60 minutes.
The play was open and entertaining as both teams were looking for that vital winning goal and following several attempts from Brocton in the Atherstone penalty area, it was Charlie Jones who went closest with a shot that hit the post and the opportunity was lost. Carl Morris had a shot cleared off the line by Dale Painter and Simeon Smith hit the top of Brocton’s cross bar.
As the game came to a close Atherstone could have taken the spoils, but for two last - ditch saves by Brocton keeper Calum Barrett.
The cup tie will resume at Silkmore Lane on Tuesday night where a result will be concluded with the winners away to Sutton Coldfied Town in the next round on 30th August 2014.

Brocton: Calum Barrett, Matt Dockerty, Matt Skinner,
Rob Tomlinson, Jamie Evans, Dave Ablewhite, Dave Berks, Charlie Jones, Carl Morris, Gary Fife, Dan Lomas.
