Worcestershire County League

Summary of results Saturday 25th April 2015

Fortunately, all matches were completed on the first day of the new season with very little bad weather about on a cold, cold day. We saw two double hundreds and two seven wicket hauls and two hat-tricks in some entertaining cricket.

In Division One 1st XIs, there were victories for Droitwich, Hagley, Worcester Nomads and Colwall on the opening day. Droitwich’s returning overseas player, Dave Lane top scored and Jake Young took five wickets as they comfortably beat Belbroughton at home. Hagley, who have signed most new players in the close season, were also big winners at newly promoted Burghill, as James Spavin made 87.

Nomads’s Ryan Tongue scored a magnificent century which proved the difference at Pershore, as the Championship favourites and last season’s runners up to Worcester made a tentative start, failing to build upon their South African student Adam Wiffen’s own century. Nomads won by 4 wickets despite Luke Dalley’s spell of 4-74.

The division’s other winners were last season’s 6th placed side, Colwall, who thrashed Bromyard who were hoping to start off the season in better fettle than their 11th place in 2014. Yesterday James Abel made 111 not out to steer his team home after Sam Taylor had wrecked the Bromyard innings taking 7-52.

Elsewhere, there were draws at Bewdley, who narrowly held off Pedmore, and at Oldswinford, where the home side could not take the final two Redditch wickets.

Next week, Colwall have another Herefordshire derby at home to Burghill and Droitwich visit Redditch, Hagley receive Bewdley and Nomads entertain Oldswinford.

In Division Two 1st XIs – Feckenham had a narrow win over Harborne, Lye beat Enville despite 6-78 from Katie Parfitt and Cookley’s new signings, Jamian Rudd with 99 and Jon Stanaway who made 86 had a good winning day at Evesham, so those three sides have maximum points.

Dominies were the other winners in a high scoring thriller, winning off the last ball at home to Coombs Wood. For the visitors, Mike Langford had made 158 not out which was replied to by Steve Miles’s 118 for Dominies.

Bredon and Stourport recorded winning draws against Malvern and Wormelow respectively. Stourport’s overseas player Kevin Renecke made 99 on his debut and was supported by Ryan Delo with 91 as they earned a draw in a rain affected match.

Next week we may have new leaders as Feckenham go to Cookley and Dominies visit Lye.

In Division Three 1st XIs – Alvechurch’s Ed Rogers started off with a century, just as he had in the final match of last season. His side thrashed newly promoted Old Vigornians at Peopleton, thanks to Rogers as well as Dan Wolstencroft’s 6 wickets.

Avoncroft beat Claverley and Netherton won by just 2 runs at home to Chaddesley Corbett to stand level with Alvechurch. There were also wins for Cleobury at Alveley,  and Bartestree at Ross on Wye.

The final match was drawn by Himbleton and Rushwick who could not match Himbleton’s large total lead by Jon Critchlow’s 128 and Sean Jenkins’ 87.

Division Four 1st XIs – had no draws but only wins, for Harvington at Hanley Castle thanks to 115 not out from Jethro Chadwick, by Five ways OEs winning by a massive 244 runs at Old Hill mainly due to Usman Mahmood’s 215, for Himley at Oldswinford which contained 123 scored by new recruit Naj Vaidya for Kidderminster at home to Halesowen, Kempsey at Martley and last, but not least, Barnards Green at home to Bromsgrove.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the 2nd XIs, Division one champions from 2014, Worcester Nomads, continued to set the pace with a big victory over a spirited Evesham, thanks to a career highest 164 from Derek Austin. But old “Degsy” was not the highest scorer on an interesting day as Hagley’s Simon Burgess made 220 not out in a record partnership for his club together with Steve Plant, who made 100 not out as they racked up 335 in 50 overs.

Despite that, Hagley failed to take the final Enville wicket and so only managed an 18 points draw to stand 5th behind, Bewdley who beat Pedmore, Colwall who beat Netherton at 10 a over including 135 not out from Henry Coleman and Redditch who had an emphatic winning draw over Rushwick with Liam Phelan making 169 and new player R. Butterworth notching 105 in reply.

The final match was a winning draw for Stourport who made 290-6 in their 50 overs including 132 not out from Mark Moss. In reply, Belbroughton went somewhat cautiously to 111-4 from their 50 overs.

In Division two, Burghill, Bromyard and yes Droitwich, lead the way after maximum points wins at Lye, Bredon and Alvechurch respectively. Bromyard’s George Godsall obviously had a social to attend as he scored 104 not out in just 50 balls to take his side to a nine wickets win at just under 10 an over.

Pershore and Coombs Wood are not far behind after 20 point victories over Cookley and Avoncroft and the solitary draw was at Harborne where the home side made 245 all out in 49 overs and Feckenham then made 135-5 in the 42 they were able to get in return.

In Division three 2nds Dominies, Alveley and Chaddesley are the early pacesetters as they recorded maximum point wins over Claverley with Dominies’ Jack Ridley making 157 at Claverley.

Kidderminster beat Bartestree and Wormelow beat Old Vigornians. In the final match, Oldswinford had to settle for a winning draw at Himley with Ian Hatton scoring 143.

Division four 2nds had no draws at all. Cleobury beat Barnards Green, Halesowen thrashed 10 man Ross on Wye, whilst Fiveways dismissed Old Hill for just 22 in 15 overs and took only four to seal victory with Nadeem Majid taking 7-11

Kempsey beat Martley, Himbleton beat Oldswinford and Hanley thrashed 10 man Harvington thanks to 6-7 from 9 overs bowled by debutant Josh Benson-Smith.
