Old Halesonians first team played host to Bedford Athletic last Saturday who sit at the bottom of the National 3 Midlands League.

This fixture just goes to prove there are no certainties against any team in this league, with Hales eventually running out winners 29 points to 10.

The game started well for Hales with a back move ending in centre Andy Holloway running a perfect line to break the defence for a try after 5 minutes, converted by Chris Hooper, 7 - 0.

The visitors, a young fit side, were not going to lie down against the league leaders and after 35 minutes of effort broke the Hales defence for a try pulling the score back to 7 - 5.

Hales could not break away from the adventurous running of the Bedford team and only after 40 minutes did the home side put together some phases of play for skipper Rich Taylor to score after forward pressure, 12 - 5 at half time. The second half again saw Bedford applying pressure but Hales managed to work another try through Holloway to lead 17 - 5. Bedford again came back and lack of tackling by the home backs gave the wing too much space to score an unconverted  try 17 - 10.

Hales injuries to talisman Tom Jordan (replaced by Tom King) and Carl Robinson (Alex Church) didn't help continuity and although the Hales pack was in the ascendency, they failed to capitalise as they should have. On 60 minutes wing Luke Smith gathered the ball to sprint through the Bedford defence for a try 22 - 10. This should have opened the flood gates but again Bedford were strong in attack and Hales lacking in ideas and control. After 75 minutes of frustrating play by the home side, Stand Off Steve Powell broke the defence to score a try converted by Hooper for a 29 - 10 victory.

Hales will need to up their game next Saturday against Bournville at the University ground, Kick off 2.15.

                 Old Hales 3rds v Old Yardleians 2nds - Friendly Old Hales Win 24 - 14

3rds Report by Craig Jukes

This game was the 8th victory in a row for OHRFC 3rd team.

The game started with a try in the first few minutes, that lead was cut back after a short time. The 1st half saw OHRCF score 3 trys, 3 conversions and a penalty, Matt Weaver with the 1st followed by 2 tries from Craig Jukes. Jonny Kew kicked all the points including a well taken penalty.

The second half was a fantastic defensive display keeping the home team out until the last few minutes. One yellow card was shown to Stephen Deakin in a case of mistaken identity for an off the ball collision in the last minute of the game. Next week will see the OHRFC going to Worcester to play Worcester Wanderers 3rd in the league.

4ths Report by Brad Vernon

After a feisty eighty minutes Old Hales 4s ran out victors 31-22 against Old Yardlians 3s. Ian Cutler ran in two tries and got three conversions to lead the way in one of his cameo appearances. Other tries came from Lee Davis, Brad Vernon and Jonno Lewis. Playing up the slope, against the wind and into the sun the 4s defence was tested to the limit in the second half, but the spirit in this team is strong this season and the win was fully deserved.
