Hannah Haywood, Sutton Coldfield RFC ladies captain and coach and 1st given the opportunity to play on Twickenham’s hallowed turf and is very excited at the opportunity.

“ I went to watch the 6 nations England v Wales match for my birthday and can’t believe I’ll get the chance to be on the pitch just a month or so after, it’s incredible. ‘ said Hannah.

Hannah (age 21), who studies Sports Management at University College Birmingham began working on resurrecting the ladies team last year. “I’ve always liked the game but never had the chance to play as a child as it was very much a boy’s game back then. By the time I got to 18 the ladies team had long since gone and so decided the best thing to do was get it running again”.

Hannah has had support from the club in setting it all up and she is well known within the RFU Midland set up as a go to person when things need arranging.

Earlier this season Hannah was chosen to be sponsored by the RFU to get her level 2 coaching qualification and she puts this to use with the current senior and young ladies sides.

“It’s vital we get a feed in to the ladies team,” said Hannah, “In the past it’s been a group of like minded ladies who all played and then with no new blood it fell away. This time around we’re keen to make the girls U13, U15 and U18 section successful and feed players into the senior set up.”

The club are investing too. There are plans to add three additional en-suite changing rooms so the ladies can play at the same time as the men’s teams and really push the one club mentality.

Hannah’s chance comes as a result of her coaching. The RFU wanted feedback which Hannah provided and this in turn opened up the chance to travel to TW1 and run some touch rugby on the famous pitch which next year will see the World Cup final.

“It’s been a great year for me in the sport,” reflected Hannah. “I’ve got my coaching qualifications, played rugby in the Sutton shirt and now have the chance to play at Twickenham. To add to it there’s a 10’s tournament coming up and the Midland 7s to look forward to at the end of May. I can’t believe it’s all happened so quickly just by getting involved.”
