Cotswold Hills League

Premier Division, Saturday, 6th. August, 2016

Leamington III (247-6) beat Exhall & Wixford (243-7) by 4 wickets.

Travelling to Exhall, Leamington II needed a win to arrest the recent slide towards the relegation zone.  Morris (51), Smith (99*) and Perry (24) got Exhall off to an ideal start and when the 30th over began at 172-1 another Leamington defeat seemed assured.  At this point Perry fell in Callum Bobath’s first over and thereafter the Leamington bowlers managed to rein-in the run rate so as to restrict the hosts to a manageable, but challenging 243-7.  The next phase of the match saw the balance of the match dramatically change.  James Cowan launched the Leamington innings in his usual combative style, scoring 117 in an opening stand of 141 in just 20 overs, meaning that an asking rate approach six-an-over was now down to four-an-over.  On his dismissal partner Mark Reynolds (36) took over and led the score up to 180 before his dismissal started a Leamington “three-wicket wobble”.  Five down and still needing 50 to win, skipper Matt Dale (28*) came to the wicket, steadied nerves and saw his team to a much deserved and most welcome 4 wicket win, creating some space between the team and relegation.  A game played in an excellent spirit.

Leamington III 20 pts, Exhall & Wixford 8 pts.
