Leamington 1st XI carried their good form into Sunday’s ECB National Club Championship match as they defeated Premier Division Barnt Green.

On an unseasonably damp day, Green batted first and made a fine start opening with a century stand. Edward Pollock went first for a well-constructed 60, and he was followed soon after by Nathan Newport who had made an attractive 67. This turned the game in Leamington’s favour as their bowlers gained control. Particularly impressive were Grant Thornton who took 3 for 34 and the miserly Paul Lawrence whose 2 for 18 was the pick of the bunch. However Green would have been satisfied with their total of 197 – 7 in 40 overs.

Leamington lost an early wicket in response, but built patiently through veteran David Hawkes (29) and Lee Hopkins who was to bat through making an excellent undefeated 67. A middle order wobble seemed to move the tie in Green’s favour until captain Rob Williams joined Hopkins in a match winning stand. Williams made 48 (for the second day running), leaving Nabeel Asghar to secure victory with a six in the penultimate over as Leamington eased to 199 -6.
