Malvern RFC take to the field at Spring Lane on Saturday for the first league match of the new season.

They entertain Market Bosworth in Midlands One (West) having had three good work-outs in pre-season matches against Hinckley (National Three), Woodford (London One) and Matson (Western Counties). Having taken Hinckley close, Malvern thrashed the Essex side, but last Saturday saw a very mixed ability Malvern side come up short against a well-drilled side from Gloucester. Head Coach Nick Tisdale and backs coach Rob Cook worked hard in training this week to correct some of the basic errors seen last time out.

The coaching team see this season as one of consolidation and rebuilding after last year’s move into the South West stripped the club of several players who were unable to commit to the extra travel involved, ending with relegation after 5 years in National Three. The nucleus of last year’s side remain, there have been several additions, including the significant signing of forwards coach Alan Keylock from Sutton Coldfield and who has played at Stourbridge and Worcester. Malvern have also enlisted the help of Worcester Warriors hooker Ed Shervington, who will be passing on front row skills, whilst England Under 18 coach Peter Walton will again be available to pass on his knowledge.

New captain Ieuan Mustow is looking forward to his role with enthusiasm, and will undoubtedly lead from the front as always. With all three senior teams playing league rugby this year, they are joined by the Under 17 age group who will be competing in the newly formed North Midlands U17 league. This group have come right through the junior section of Malvern RFC under the tutelage of former players Gareth Richards and Vince Hill and this year will see the final step in transition to senior rugby. They train with the seniors on Tuesday nights and the club is expecting great things of them.

Malvern have also announced the first “Lunch with a Legend” of the season, when former Bath, England and British/Irish Lion Nigel Redman will be the guest speaker. The lunch takes place on Saturday 19th October prior to the game against Barkers Butts and the £19 ticket includes match entry. Tickets will be available from the Clubhouse and past experience shows it is advisable to book early as these popular lunches sell out very quickly.
