Second team - Old Halesonians 2nds 12 - 31  Hinckley 2nds

Old Hales faced last season’s league winners Hinckley at Wassell Grove. Hinckley had the better of the first quarter of the game with Old Hales battling hard to keep the score at 0-0. After 24 minutes Hinckley were awarded a penalty within range of the posts; the penalty kick was successful for a 0-3 lead.

On 28 minutes Old Hales back row, Sol Rogers received a yellow card for illegal use of the shoulder. Within minutes Hinckley were on the attack stretching the home side’s defence to score a converted try for a 0-10 lead at half time.

Two minutes into the second half, Hinckley capitalised on an Old Hales penalty infringement and from a quick tap penalty moved up the field at speed to score under the posts. The conversion was successful for a 0-17 lead.

Old Hales substitute back row, Masters, impressed on his debut and carried the ball with purpose. He was tackled 15 metres short of the line and the ball was knocked backwards by Hinckley; left wing, Jake Shellis collected the ball at pace to score for Old Hales and reduce the Hinckley lead to 5-17.

Hinckley were quickly back on the attack down the left and Old Hales fullback, Andy Holloway, who had played well all afternoon, could do nothing to stop a two to one overlap for the Hinckley outside centre to score his second try of the game. Score 5-24.

Once again a quick tap penalty by Hinckley on the halfway line put Old Hales on the back foot. Slick handling resulted in the Hinckley outside centre crossing the line for his third try and a lead of 5-31.

With two minutes of play remaining Old Hales were on the attack in the Hinckley half. Fly half Tom Harris spotted an opportunity and a deft cross field kick was well taken in flight by right wing ‘Speedy’ (James Worton) to score. Jake Shellis successfully converted for a final score of 12-31.
