Another week of weather mayhem in the BDFL but we managed to get four games chalked off, including 3 cup games which are now the sole priority going forward with cup final season beginning at the start of March. In comparison to other leagues this wasn’t too bad a return; The Kidderminster League giants who always have games played on incredible well-draining pitches played 10 gamed today, whilst Worcester and Redditch Leagues were more in touch with us in respect of low numbers played, 1 and 0 games respectively. Anyway we digress so onto the action.

Firstly in the WA Harris Cup, Division 1 Chaddesley Corbett had an easy and comfortable home win to see them into the Quarter-Finals, this after an 8-0 defeat of Division 3 side Arrow Valley in Round 2. Alex Dugmore, recently snapped up by Midland Football League side Fairfield Villa after Paul Oakes’s scouting network came up trumps yet again, bagged another hat-trick (4 in total), 2 for the superstar Matt Perry (but who once again got injured and had to come off) and one each for Adam Simpson and Josh Sellers. Chaddesley have got another home tie in the Quarter-Final where they will play either Northfield Athletic/WCT Youth Raiders or Rubery Athletic but it will be well into March before we even consider getting this game on!

In the Division 1 cup game at Charford International Stadium, only one pitch down there survived a morning inspection and Northfield Athletic beat GLA 7-0 to move into the semi-finals where a firecracker of a match between Conway Albion or Bartley Green Sunday awaits, that’s if the latter ever play again having been called off again today. Northfield went ahead in this game through a Josh Moore screamer (Scott Taylor with the assist) before returning striker Jason Cowley took centre stage in the second half as he bagged FIVE goals inside half an hour, one a stunning run from the halfway line and he also hit the woodwork twice; The bedrocker, Paul Newman, also got in on the act with one goal to complete the convincing scoreline although Newman had what is known as the ‘proverbial nightmare’ game by his own admittance!

In the Evesham Hospital Minor Cup, Stoke Prior travelled to the legendary named Tesco United from the Evesham League a game which was thankfully re-arranged and moved to a 3G surface with an afternoon kick off; With Stoke’s CEO Abi Maycroft making her first public appearance pitchside for some 11 weeks, the team could not put on a winning performance for her crashing out 4-1 and there wasn’t even the chance for the team to go and have a free consolation shop afterwards!

Meanwhile some smart late night work by Awkies Allstars secretary Chris Fox, ensured they played a re-arranged Division 2 fixture against Meadow Park after Awkies were unable to agree terms and conditions with their Kidderminster League opponents Mostyn C4L for a reversal of a cup match, meaning the 4G facility at Four Dwellings was in danger of being left unused. Awkies will be delighted their efforts paid off as the end result was a 3-2 win over the league leaders, which moves them up to 7th in the table. Meadow Park stay top by 3 points but nearest pursuers Rednal Social Club now have a game in hand. A real dogs of war game this between two physical sides, 3 bookings for Meadow Park and 1-1 at the break was a fair reflection as both sides cancelled each other out. MP took the lead in the second half (their goals coming from Craig Barnett and Dan Cliffe) before Awkies came fighting back, goals in the end from Joe Stewart, James Carnihan and Jason Gibbons, the latter who scored a world class winner with a sublime lob from Carnihan’s stylish pass.

And finally, Division 3 side Bromsgrove Corinthians amazingly managed to get a friendly played at West Heath Park against South Birmingham League Premier Division side Norton Albion and they came away 5-4 winners as they successfully blew out of the xmas cobwebs. On a very heavy pitch which significantly cut up, the goals in this one came from Chris Walder, Bryn Morgan, Tom Mason, Alex Beck and Micky Price. A good morale boosting victory for Corinthians all things being equal!

We’ve made a point of praying for better weather in the past few reports but it has made no difference! We can therefore do no more than plan on a week by basis going forward and just take/deal with whatever is thrown at us; However it is important all clubs stick together as part of the BDFL family as there will be times in the next few weeks when clubs do not have games due to other matches taking a higher priority; As much as this is not ideal, it is impossible to please everyone when we have only played 15 games in the past 5 weeks and need to get cup finals ready for the start of March!
