Before finally gaining a narrow away victory unbeaten Cheltenham North were given the fright of their lives in this very entertaining and open game.

Kings had to make a last minute shuffle in their attack due to one player being stuck at work and the move gave Coach Jackson the opportunity to try a few positional changes. Earlier in the week a training session based upon defensive formations proved to be successful as from the off Kings effectively smothered the Cheltenham attack and made the most of the opportunities created. The home side son attacked but Cheltenham responded by moving the ball upfield via a series of penalties that Kings conceded. Kings defended well and increased pressure upon North. After 16 min’s they play took a ball against the head which set off a move that left winger Jack Manners finally finished crossing the North’s line for an unconverted corner flag try.  Kings lost influential 2nd row Tom Hatfield with a knee injury .and the next 15 mins play saw Kings repelling their visitors efforts and finally broke away with a fine run by Will Greenwood almost led to a 2nd try. North then conceded a penalty just short of the half way line and Ben Manners extended Kings lead by 3 points as his huge kick flew between the posts. Following another penalty Manners the hit an upright before he was successful when Cheltenham were found offside. KN 11.pts  C.North 0 pts. As Kings maintained their attack Phil Stock seized upon a loose ball and a clever pass through a mêlée of players to the waiting Chris Hands saw the prop forward‘s mazy run through the visitors defence end in a great try which Manners easily converted. Half Time.  Kings Norton 18 pts, Cheltenham North nil.

Coach Jackson warned his enthusiastic young squad that the visitors were nowhere near being beaten yet and that all the hard work was still to be done. North opened the half in determined fashion and after a period of pressure were awarded an easy penalty in front of the posts to open their account. 12 mins later they broke through Kings defence and scored a good converted try as their forwards made a great drive to the line.  It was now “game on” with the score at KN 18 pts Cheltenham Nth. 10 pts.   Kings soon worked their way upfield and after winning a lineout, the ball was swiftly fed wide to Jack Manners and his speed took him past the visitor’s defences to score a great try under the posts which his brother easily converted. Chelt’s came back strongly and scored a good try in the corner before Kings again extended their lead when good work by “Handsy” gave Kris Fenn the opportunity to crash through for an unconverted try and gain Kings a 4 try bonus point. Kings 30 pts Chelt’s 15 pts  With just 18 mins remaining this proved to be the final home score and the visitors worked hard to get back into the game and as the home side tired scored 2 quick tries one of which was converted. A frantic last 10 mins saw Kings resolute defence stretched to the limits. Cheltenham stayed strong and scored a converted try in the final minute. Despite a spirited upfield move to the visitors try line Kings conceded a penalty thus losing the opportunity to score again as the full time whistle went.

The home side had to be satisfied with a creditable 2 bonus points from an exciting game of 9 tries

Kings continue their league programme on Saturday when they travel to Evesham who are still to record a win this season.
