Old Leamingtonians Ladies RFC got their first win of the season this weekend, narrowly beating Old Newtonians Ladies 14-12 at home on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

It was a closely fought contest but Old Leams were the first team to get points on the board. New number 8 Dulcie Hardwick scored her first try for Old Leams, picking and going from a ruck close to the Old Newts try line. This was expertly converted by centre Sam Smyth, putting Old Leams 7-0 in the lead.

Old Newts were quick to strike back, with some strong running from their 8 enabling them to force their way through Old Leams’ defensive line. There were some nervous moments for Old Leams when Old Newts were awarded a penalty within sight of the posts, but the kick fell short, allowing Old Leams to go in to the break with a narrow lead.

After the restart Old Leams scored once again, with skipper Jen Vermeulen taking advantage of a loose ball to run half the length of the pitch. Once again, Sam Smyth converted to extend Old Leams’ lead. Old Newts came back fighting, swiftly scoring and converting to take their points tally to 12 and cause a few final nervous minutes for Old Leams, but the home team were able to hang on for the victory.
