As a 2013/14 season opener Old Leams entertained Melbourne RFC from South Derbyshire at First XV squad level and Broadstreet Vets at 3rd XV.

Melbourne who gained promotion last season to the same level as OL’s will enjoy playing this season provided excellent opposition for the pre-season opener with a game of four 20 minute sessions.

The game was played in fine style with both teams adopting an open running game that provided a large crowd of spectators with an enjoyable afternoon’s entertainment.  There was little to choose between the two squads but OL’s solid defensive play prevented Melbourne from converting possession into points whilst OL’s created good running chances that swift interplay resulted in four tries being scored during the four sessions whilst Melbourne managed two.

This was a fine result as Melbourne only lost two games in their league programme last season and the fine open and forward play from OL’s reflected well on the pre-season fitness training and coaching.

The style and speed of play adopted augers well for the coming season and it is hoped that success will result from the hard work put in to date.

The games were followed by music on the club patio, a BBQ, and a disco in the evening.
