Worcestershire County League

Summary of results Saturday 11th July 2015

Not a great day to be a bowler perhaps as “The Groundsmens’ pride and joy” (this is supposed to be a Cricketing reference) was on show with flat and flatter pitches.

In Division One 1st XIs, leaders Pershore proved again why they are the stand-out side, as their depth in batting carried them home at Worcester Nomads after the home side had posted an imposing 296-4 with Josh Haynes recording a second century (145) in his second match.

Pershore are now 55 points clear of Nomads in 2nd and their position was made even stronger by the fact that Nomads held onto that position, despite losing, as Droitwich in 3rd and Hagley 4th  both failed to overtake them, losing at Belbroughton and at home to Burghill, respectively. So there is less than a win covering 2nd-5th so we may have an exciting rush for runners up position as, surely now, Pershore will be elevated for the third time. Hopefully this time the strength of their 2nds and 3rds, also leading their divisions will be enough to keep them there. However, I digress!

Bewdley beat Pedmore to send them to the foot of the table by 11 points below Oldswinford, who lost at Redditch by a mere 12 runs to change places with them and so they now trail them by 6. Jack Roberson of Redditch made 89, the same score as Lee Nightingale replied with for Oldswinford. In the last match, Bromyard were hammered by Colwall for whom Tom Coleman took 6-29 and Ben Cooke scored 113*.

Burghill’s win keeps them above the danger zone although with both Astwood Bank and Worcester in the relegation spots at present in the Birmingham League, there could be three getting sent down to Division two this year!

With the attention switching to the foot of the table, next week Pedmore go to Pershore (ouch!), Oldswinford entertain Nomads and Redditch visit Droitwich to see if these three can literally “turn the tables” in their scramble for vital survival points.

In Division Two 1st XIs, leaders Bredon made an impressive 380-3 in their win over bottom side Malvern, who won their first match last week with Jamie Munro scoring 160 and Martin Hill 100 not out and they are still 15 points in front of Cookley, who also remain unbeaten as they beat Evesham but 38 ahead of Stourport who won by just 3 runs at Wormelow.

Dominies won at Coombs Wood so cling onto 4th spot and Feckenham are 5th following a victory at Harborne which firmly roots them in the bottom two. The final match saw Enville relieve their own pressure with a big win at Lye thanks to 139 not out scored by Matthew Branch.

Next week Bredon visit Enville, Cookley are at Feckenham, Stourport host Harborne.

In Division Three 1st XIs, leaders Alvechurch lost for the first time but only after scoring 350-7 with another century scored by Ed Rogers and 91 from Matt Hayward. In reply, Old Vigornians were up for the task, with Ahsan Fiaz cracking an impressive 174 not out and Chris Drew made 94 as they guided the old boys home with almost three overs to spare.

So, Alvechurch’s lead is reduced to 12 points but now it is over Bartestree who thrashed Ross on Wye and not Chaddesley or Himbleton who lost to Netherton and Rushwick respectively (Rushwick winning by just 1 wicket). Bartestree are therefore 1 point in front of Himbleton, who, in turn are 2 ahead of Chaddesley, themselves 12 in front of Netherton who are just 27 adrift of the top. Simples!?

Cleobury Mortimer beat Alveley, with 90 from Neil Griffiths to keep the Shropshire at the foot of the table, 16 points behind another Shropshire side, Claverley who lost at home to Avoncroft and return to the relegation positions after a brief respite as a result of the Ovs’ heroics at Alvechurch which takes them ahead of Claverley.

Next week Alvechurch are at improving Netherton, while Bartestree visit Avoncroft and the bottom two Alveley and Claverley meet.

Division Four 1st XIs – Kempsey marched on with victory at home to Martley whilst Bromsgrove have taken over second place from Barnards Green after inflicting a very narrow5 runs win over them at The Hedges ground. So it is Bromsgrove who are now 18 behind Kempsey and 11 ahead of Barnards Green.

Kidderminster stayed 4th following a win at Halesowen, but Fiveways slipped up at home to bottom side Old Hill, losing off the last ball.

Himley won at home to Oldswinford thanks to 107 scored by 15 year old Jordan Whitehouse and this despite Matt Sidaway notching 151 for the visitors. Hanley Castle won at Harvington thanks to an all-round performance from Todd Mathews.

Unbeaten Kempsey must visit Kidderminster next week and Bromsgrove are at Oldswinford whilst Barnards Green host Fiveways.

Division Five 1st XIs – leaders Astwood Bank thrashed Enville by 222 runs with Paul Baker making 129 and they head Stourport, winners by 26 over Old Elizabethans by just 10 points.

Tenbury beat Hallow and West Malvern beat Barnt Green to stay 3rd and 4th, 21 and 31 respectively behind Stourport and also to open up a 51 points cushion for the top four above Stourbridge, who are themselves 45 in front of the rest after they beat Redditch.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the 2nd XIs, Division one leaders Stourport remain 42 points in front after they won at home to Belbroughton with Dan Pittaway scoring 108. Nomads had a second successive win at Evesham and moved up to 2nd, overtaking their opponents in the process. Evesham are now 8 behind Nomads, so 50 adrift of Stourport.

Redditch come next after a win at bottom club Rushwick and Colwall are 5th despite losing at Netherton after being all out in 35 overs.

There were also wins for Bewdley over Pedmore and Hagley at Enville.

In Division two, Pershore maintained their lead, winning by 4 wickets against Cookley and Bromyard remain second after Pete Whittenbury’s maiden century, a sizable one at 126 saw them to victory over Bredon who are bottom.

Harborne beat Feckenham and Coombs Wood won at Avoncroft with 103 and 4 wickets from Nigel Butterworth after Jon Bird had made 95 for the home side. Burghill beat Lye and lastly, Droitwich stay 5th after Rhys John’s 100 helped them beat Avechurch.

In Division three 2nds the leaders Oldswinford beat Himley but Wormelow slipped up at Old Vigornians and now trail the leaders by 26 points.

Kidderminster have gone third with a win over Bartestree and have overtaken Bromsgrove who lost at Alveley as the home side’s Jamie Lawrence claimed 6-35.

Claverley narrowly beat Dominies and Malvern and Chaddesley played out a tie with Chaddesley’s Nigel Middleton scoring 116 and Malvern’s Rob Perrins making 109.

Division four 2nds leaders Fiveways beat Old Hill but second placed Kempsey lost at Martley so the margin is now 19 points between the top two.

Himbleton beat Oldswinford, Halesowen thrashed Ross and Barnards Green recorded the day’s biggest margin, beating Cleobury by 321runs. In the BG innings there were tons for Robert Wilson (108) and Robbie Lewis (111 not out).

Division five 2nds Stourport powered on by beating Old Elizabethans and Tenbury styed second, 27 points behind, with a big win at Hallow, Damian Yeomans scoring 118 not out.

Astwood Bank are 3rd after beating Enville and Barnt Green beat West Malvern.

Division Six, leaders Cutnall Green beat joint 3rd placed Harborne and Birlingham remain 2nd to them, just 4 points behind, after having their match with Netherton conceded to them.

Hagley thrashed Nomads and are 3rd and Ombersley won again, making three in a row as Will Hymer scored another 103 for them at Worcester against Romsley.

Division Seven North leaders Droitwich still lead the way as they crushed Romsley with 92 from Darren Purchase and Coombs Wood are second, 8 points behind, after they saw off Harborne. Stone beat Pedmore, dismissing them for 44 with Chris Harler grabbing 5-11 and Cookley won for the second time, beating Fiveways.

Division Seven South –Pershore stay top, after they easily beat Evesham. Then come Worcester, 38 points behind, after they were beaten at Bartestree thanks to the home side’s Tom Haynes who scored 114 and took 4 wickets to guide his side to 3rd.

The Taverners lost at Droitwich and Bromyard’s Tom Bayliss, playing well below his former standard made 172 to set up a big win over Bredon.

Netherton defeated Avoncroft in the first Divisions 3-7 KO Cup final and so become the first holders of the Carter Cup, presented by former Worcestershire playing and coaching legend, Bob Carter, at Kidderminster last Monday.
