Old Halesonians in touch with league leaders after win in Cheshire

Hales travelled to Cheshire in an effort to avenge the loss to Sandbach earlier in the season.

Hales were well prepared with Greg Smith at scrum half replacing injured Nathan Jones and rearranged forwards with Dan Young moving to second row, Jake Hayden-Wright on the back row.

The game started with Hales immediately in control with forwards and backs combining well. Early driving runs by Loz Breese, Tom Jordan and centre Andy Robinson making ground.

After 10 minutes Hales' forward rucking power resulted in Jordan breaking through the Sandbach defence for a try, converted by Chris Hooper to lead 0 - 7. The home side came back with a penalty 3 - 7.

Hales scrum half Greg Smith kept Sandbach on the back foot whilst linking forwards and backs again. A driving maul resulted in developing recruit Jake Hayden-Wright driving over for a well deserved try, converted by Hooper, 3 - 14.

Straight from the kick off the visitors attacked in all areas, forwards in total dominance with Dan Young next on the try list, converted by Hooper 3 - 21. Additional pressure by Hales forced two penalties in close succession 3 - 27.

The half time chat was positive with much more to do but Sandbach came back early into the second half. Replacement prop Cliff Tomkinson came on for Tom Dempsey as a tactical change, jack Duffy coming on for Jake H - W in the back row.

Shortly after half time Hales were again in control with driving mauls towards the opposition pack, hooker Pete Fitzgerald with his trademark break and drive off the base of a ruck to score a forwards try 3 - 32.

Then Hales relaxed and allowed Sandbach get back into the game with a well worked try and conversion to pull back to 10 - 32.

Whilst Hales had allowed Sandbach to come back they took the game again into the home 22.

Forwards again delivered and fed the backs, Powell to centres Sabel and Robinson, to wing Luke Smith who broke the defence to score 10 - 37.

The result stood and Hales were content with the 5 league point win to sit at 4th position, back in contention with the top.

Hales meet Scunthorpe at home this Saturday kick off 2.15 pm.
