A rare Saturday afternoon away from the pressures of National League Rugby, gave the Hales coaching staff the opportunity to rest players for this North Mids Cup Semi Final match against last years relegated league rivals Newport.
The visitors are looking for a speedy return to National 3 having been unbeaten so far this season and heading the league below. With sticky conditions underfoot, the game kicked off in front of a good crowd and immediately Hales took the initiative with a series of penetrating runs into the opposition 22.
Newport were well drilled and showed true potential in this game, defending and counter attacking well.  Hales pack dominated the scrum with front row of Louis Padian, Callum Young and Tom Dempsey pressurising their opposition throughout.
On 18 minutes constant pressure by Hales forced a penalty which Chris Hooper kicked to the corner. Young found Tom King who took clean ball supported by his pack. The ever improving Guy Field secured the ball and drove over with his pack for a try, converted by Hooper 7 - 0.
Newport to their credit gained some good possession for the next 10 minutes and were rewarded on 27 minutes with an unconverted Try to bring them back into the game at 7 - 5.
It took just 4 minutes, and another dominating Scrum, for Hales to extend their lead. Player coach Mark Evans picked up from the back and smashed his way through for A Try, converted by Hooper for a 14 - 5 lead.
A further period of dominance was rewarded on 40 minutes when from just inside the Newport half, Hales stole the ball which Chris Harris fed to Fly Half Matt Williams who broke through, passed to the supporting Wing Luke Smith who then passed to Hooper, to the supporting Warren Oliver to score a great try.
With Hooper injured during the play, Matt Williams slotted a difficult kick for a 21 - 5 half time lead. In the second half Hooper was replaced by James Mitchell who went on the wing, Andy Holloway to Full Back and Oliver to Centre.
However it made little difference to the play other than the odd counter from Newport, which was well defended by a determined Hales side. On 62 minutes a planned move from a scrum on the Newport 22 saw Williams feed  Holloway inside who seared through the defence unopposed for a great try, converted by Holloway 28 - 5.
Hales made some more changes with Prop Harry Higgs on for Tom Dempsey and James Sadler in for Loz Breese, both players fitted in immediately and contributed well to the game.
Continued pressure by the home side in the 75th minute saw a perfectly placed kick by Williams to the opposite side of the field for flying  Winger Luke Smith to touch down in the corner for the final score of the game 33 - 5.
On 79 minutes an altercation resulted in a red card for Second Row, Guy Field but this was the only contentious issue all day, a convincing win for Hales who now meet Whitchurch in the North Mids Cup Final in May 2015.
Old Hales first team are in league action again this Saturday at home to Dudley Kingswinford, kick off 2.15. This is also Presidents Day with club President Murray Keen welcoming all to Wassell Grove
No games this weekend for the 2nds or 3rds
