Third team - Bromsgrove 3rds 17pts – 38pts Old Halesonians 3rds

Old Hales 2nds and Old Hales 3rds had fixtures planned against Bromsgrove; however, Bromsgrove 2nds cried off their fixture late in the week, as a result both playing squads for the 3rds game were a mix of 2nds and 3rds players.

The first twenty minutes of the game was a close fought encounter with both side defending well. Old Hales broke the deadlock when Matt Williams made a short well timed pass to Josh Woodward; Woodward broke through the Bromsgrove first line of defence and weaved his way to the try line from 40 metres out to score. Billy Taylor added the conversion.

Bromsgrove fought back and following a penalty kick to touch, took clean ball at the lineout and mauled their way over the line for an unconverted try.

Matt Williams continued to be influential and another short pass allowed left wing Dan Smith to breach the Bromsgrove defence 45 metres out and then continued a determined run to score under the posts. Taylor slotted over the conversion for a 14-5 lead.

Old Hales were in their element now and were making the ball do the work. A long pass out to the left found centre Alex Eccles in space and Eccles rounded the defence to score; once again Taylor added the extra points for a score of 21-5.

Old Hales scored their final try of the half when a quick tap penalty released Scott Rudge to make a short burst down the left to score. Half time score: 26-5.

Old Hales were on the front foot from the off and a powerful drive by substitute James Saddler scattered the Bromsgrove defence before the ball was moved quickly to the right for Eccles to make a try scoring pass to Callum Weston.

Bromsgrove regrouped and scored two tries in quick succession to reduce the deficit to 31-17.

A final flurry by Old Hales saw Matt Williams make a good break through the Bromsgrove defence and passed to Billy Taylor in support. Taylor was stopped just short of the line and at the breakdown Bromsgrove infringed to prevent a certain try. The referee awarded a penalty try to Old Hales and Taylor landed the conversion to make the final score 38-17.
