Old Leams had to settle for a bonus point at the end of a tight match that saw each side score a first half converted try A second half converted penalty gave Old Covent’s the win.

The game, sponsored by Mike Vallance, was evenly contested throughout with both sides adopting similar game plans, opening up the game when chances arose, but it was forwards dominated game with neither side being able to create many scoring opportunities.

Old Covent’s were first to score with a try between the posts that was converted.  OL’s came more into the game towards the end of the first half and Old Covent’s were penalized on a number of occasions resulting in a yellow card.  OL’s opted to kick for touch and put pressure on the visiting defence but all to no avail. From another penalty just inside the Old Covent’s 22 metre area, scrum half Toby Lord took a tap penalty and sprinted through a surprised opposition who were waiting for the kick to go to touch. Angus Rose converted to level the scores.

The second half followed the same pattern with neither side dominating and with defences holding firm it was left to a penalty to decide the game. OL’s had the better of the game but could not find a way to penetrate the solid defence put up by the visitors. On reflection, with a strong wind at their backs,  On reflection, the decision not to kick for goal from kickable goal situations might in hindsight be considered missed opportunities.  It was also a fact that with OL’s pressing for the winning score the match official blew for time with seven minutes remaining of normal time plus any additional time added on for injuries.

With no 1st XV league fixture next OL’s next trip is to Stourbridge Lions on March 1st.
