Old Leamingtonians Under 18s notched up their sixth win in a row with a hard fought league victory over Broadstreet on Saturday.

OLs made a tremendous start, reclaiming the ball from the kick off, and releasing Nick Sapsford to score within the first minute. This failed to set the tone however, as a mixture of stout Broadstreet defence and wrong OL options frustrated the blue and golds! In fact, the last move of the half saw Broadstreet nudge ahead with a converted try, scored by Elliot Brookes following a powerful run; Jay West adding the conversion.

Now playing into the breeze, OLs reverted to the excellent rugby seen so far this season, with forwards and backs combining well. Pressure told on Broadstreet, with a clearance kick charged down by Connor Jones, and fly-half Alex Witchell reacting first to claim the try after eight minutes of the second period. OLs took just two more minutes to extend the lead when Callum Semple finished off a good passage play cutting in off the right to score [see attached]. Broadstreet regathered and using Brookes to good effect began to pin OLs in their own 22. From a penalty advantage however, Witchell broke blind on the right from his own line, drew the last two defenders, and slipped the ball to Max Ward who hared in from the half way line for a fantastic try [see attached]. Semple added the extras.

OLs were now in a comfortable lead, and perhaps eased off the pressure a little, allowing Broadstreet a consolation try following a strong driving maul. The final five minutes saw OLs remain in control, not without a few alarms, to secure a 22 – 12 win.
